Proposals for information

Today I’m listing a series of proposals about information. The list will be completed with ideas that you send in, just as I’ve done on the topics of health and energy.
Information is a fundamental necessity in a democracy and also for the survival of individuals. If the control of information is concentrated in the hands of a few people, there will automatically be antidemocratic happenings. If information is referred to economic units and not to the citizens, the interests of multinationals and of powerful economic groups will gain over the interests of the individual. Information is thus fundamental to any other social area: energy, the economy, education, and health.
Citizen with no information or with bad information are not in a good position to make decisions. They can take on a role as consumer or voter who is passive and is excluded from the choices that affect them.

My proposals are:

- digital citizenship by birth: free access to the Internet for every Italian citizen
- elimination of public financing of newspapers
- no national TV channel to have majority ownership by any private person or organisation. Shareholdings must be widespread with no one allowed to own more than a 2% share.
- no national daily newspaper to have majority ownership by any private person or organisation. Shareholdings must be widespread with no one allowed to own more than a 2% share.
- sale of 2 public TV channels to a widespread collection of shareholders, with no one allowed to own more than a 2% share
- a single public TV channel, without advertising, that is informative and cultural and independent of political parties
- abolition of the Gasparri law
- Complete national coverage of Broadband
- nationalisation of the telephone infrastructure to be bought back at cost price by Telecom Italia and the commitment by the State to supply the same services at prices that compete with all other telephone operators.
- introduction of Wimax nodes for mobile access and widespread Internet access.
- elimination of line rental for landline telephones
- immediate alignment of connection tariffs and telephone tariffs with European ones.
- a top limit of 5% nationally for companies selling publicity owned by a single economic entity.
- reduction of the time period for Intellectual Property Rights to 20 years
- abolition of the Urbani law on copyright
- abolition of digital terrestrial TV and restitution of the investments made by the State to the private entities involved.

Mr. Woody Alessio,if you want to hurl invectives against Beppe on this page, please, write them in English!
Your comment would be impolite and boring alike, but at least you could make yourself understood by the foreigners!

Posted by: Raffaella Biferaler | April 6, 2006 06:21 PM

Dear Mr. Woody,
if you like to spam the English version at least do it in English.
That would be sign of education and respect to the rules.

Thank you.

P.S. I know, I always forget it. People on the center-right wing consider themselves always above the rules. I should know better by now. My fault!

New democracy:

Thank you Leandro!
I like this english version of the Blog, the communication is easier and always proper!

Posted by: Raffaella Biferale | April 5, 2006 08:49 PM

Dear Beppe
(and Beppe's readers around the world)

have you noticed that the video showing
what happened during the opening
day of the Italian presidence in
the EU parliamemt in Strasburgo (that
where the Berlusca gives the kapo to Mr. Schulz, used to be linked in Beppe's 09.03.06 blog)
is not no more available in its integral version?

Of the version that used to show many
significant (and shamed, sad) moments of that day, only 37 sec remains.

What has it happened? Some hidden censorship in the net?

thanks a lot for your suggestions concerning the illegal immigration. I never told anyone that we should stop immigrants to come over and work in Italy. Probably u too are currently working or studying abroad and already have experienced the fact that a multicultural society is far better than a closed one. My point was to stress the limit of the actual law and its applications that is barely efficient to keep undesidered people out of our borders and legalize the others so that they won't be an easy target for the criminal organizations.
In any case thanks a lot for your comments Raffaella.

Posted by: leandro matteucci | April 5, 2006 07:24 PM

That would be so nice. I hope those ideas are accepted before i flee from italy. I'm sad and sick of the present days.

Posted by: George Scarpetta | April 5, 2006 07:13 PM

that was my concern as well, as you could read in my previou post.

You are completely right we need to work primarily on 2 things thru our Institutions

1. Introduce the concept and pleasure of legality

2. Church rules in Vatican not in Italy, end of the story.

Hi Beppe,

It is wonderful to see the great success of this web site: so much people shares common opinions with entustiasm, my sincerely congratulations.

I write this in English even though could be italian as well, I am Fiorentino, because leaving abroad (now in Stockholm) I feel the common sense of the italians abroad.

It is like "to steal in a church" making comparisons between Italy and the nordic countries, so I refrain to do so.

And then where to start from?

One thing as father of two kids I feel: the worst that the Italian politicians have done is to kill the hope and the entusism of the young generations (I include myself in this group).

To all the others here in this community all my best, Grazie Beppe.

Guys, to improve Information freedom in Italy we need to tackle Mafia and the Church. Immigration and rest are other issues.
The problem is that, Information is controlled by a deep fear inside majority of Italian Citizens. That Fear is being created by two institutions, Church and the Mafia.
We have to overcome this fear and improve our level of consciousness.

The Church has to understand that Religion is a faith and they cannot impose it. People have to realize themselves what it is good and what it is bad; sometimes making mistakes is good for learning.

Mafia has also been a Big player in our day to day life. The connection between Mafia and Politics in Italy is gone forward for too long. It is time to take responsibility in order to promote freedom of Information and Speech.

Beppe, what do you think about this?

I would like to know your opinion on these issues.

Posted by: Ivan Bettelli | April 5, 2006 04:39 PM

@Leandro Matteucci
I think we must suggest something about information...
Anyway, to stop the illegal immigration we must give a possibility to those immigrants who are already working in Italy. We need immigrants, how could for example old people go on without them? Our society is getting on the one hand more and more individualist, we don't want to take care of our old parents, on the other hand we don't want too much immigration!
That is crazy!

Posted by: Raffaella Biferale | April 5, 2006 03:58 PM

Hi everyone!
I used to post in Italian but it is always over-crowded by hundreds of useless posts regarding politicians and coglione reports!
We should:
1) Limit the SALARY to the politicians
2) Invest in innovations and research
3) Illegal immigration should be stopped

Thinking about it, i guess i should add some other 15 points to the lists but that's Italy: let us be real on the possibilities. If we focus on 3 major problems and 10 minor one's.......we would be in the first 3 in Europe!

P.S.: would u please guys stop posting stupid letters and comments in the italian section so that all of us can post there and enjoy brilliant suggestions?

Dear Beppe Grillo,
Beppe, I really like your ideas, but I think you should focus on these two following problems before proceeding with the implementation of your program.

I think in Italy the Church and the Mafia have a big influence in the control of the information.

Before proceeding with your proposals you must first win the BIG 2.

My proposal is to limit the powers of the Church and the Pope in Interfering with the Political and Information issues.
Send the 3000 Italian Soldiers, at present based in Iraq, to some of south of Italy Regions in order to re-take control of the infrastructure and re-launch a feeling of trust and motivation in the most vulnerable regions of Italy.

I sent the email to the government!
I think he overstepped the limits of good tast!
It's enough!

Dear Beppe,
I was wondering if our Premier in his infinite wisdom has found "inspiration" from a famous quote made by Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death the right to say it".

Thanks, un coglione Londinese

Posted by: Francesco Cossa | April 5, 2006 10:05 AM

Dear Beppe,
I am behind you 100%.

Further proposals:

• Our Government has to make sure that the State is laic.
I mean make sure that in schools as well as in all the decisions concerning our life Church is out of the decision making process. Catholic Church rules in Vatican, Italian Government rules in Italy.
• Last but not least I would like the Italian Government to establish budget to promote the research and commercialization of alternative energies.

To all the Italian citizens, yesterday I wrote to the Italian Government regarding my concerns and doubts about Berlusconi statement.
I copied in my email also newspapers (left & right) and blogs address.
If you have the same concerns and you feel offended I invite you to do the same.

Distinti saluti,

Maena Gambaiani
Cittadina italiana non votante centro destra = cogliona

Hi Beppe, I am not english or american. I am italian, born in Turin, living in Berlin. I thought it was a good idea to write you on the english version of the blog:it is not so crowded here! I mean, the comment above in spanish it's really ilarious, but maybe not particularly helpfull. Well, basically I wanted to say that I find your proposition very good. I hope that the 0,1 percent of it comes to reality in the next ten would be a great result. I am sorry to be a bit negative, but you know better then me who decide stuffs in Italy. Not the italian citizens...and maybe not even italian politicians. We should take example by the french: gosh they are kicking their government ass! It is the only thing they do understand. Of course it would be much better not to use the car for the next year, don't smoke cigarettes, not to buy the products of illegal companies. A real strike. I try to do it. I did sold my car, I take the subway that in Berlin functions really well...and I save so much money!
We have anyway to keep strong and start changing the way we think in general. By thinking different we end up acting different and so on. At the moment I have the feeling that the world and the politic it is like a huge Vanity Fair, and it is very difficult not to be ripped off all the time!...
I will try to be usefull for this peacefull democratic revolution in my country. Speriamo in bene c...o!
