Sorry, Naples

Clicca il video

Yesterday evening in Naples, I said sorry to all the people of Campania.

Sorry! I’m here to say sorry to you on behalf of all the Italians.
In 1861 you were annexed by the people of Piedmont with a war of occupation. Naples was one of the capitals of Europe. With Victor Emmanuel II, it became the capital of emigration. The Savoys carried away the cash box of the Kingdom and sent you General Cialdini. Tens of thousands of people of Campania were massacred. Before being subjects of the people from Piedmont, they were subjects of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The next morning they were brigands. The technique is always the same: first they throw mud at you, then they kill you or beat you up. Naples is the world capital of rubbish. Dirty. Disgusting. It’s in Newsweek, Time, Le Monde. You are benefactors. You dispose of toxic waste from the whole world, and above all from the companies of Northern Italy. To poison Campania costs less than getting rid of toxic slurry. Who gains? The Gross Domestic Product!
After being unified with Italy you are no longer a people. You are lazzaroni, people of the Camorra, scum, louts. You who had Cuma and Capua thousands of years ago. Greek civilization, Etruscan, Roman. Today you are prisoners in your own home. You don’t even know who you are. I beg your pardon for the Camorra, for Bassolino, for Veltroni, for Berlusconi, for Ms Iervolino, for Cirino Pomicino. I beg your pardon for Mussolini, for fascism, for the two world wars, for the race laws, for the ships full of emigrants. Pardon for having reduced one of the most beautiful cities in the world to an advertising spot on rubbish.
Tenímmoce accussí: ánema e core...nun ce lassammo cchiù, manco pe' n'ora...stu desiderio 'e te mme fa paura...

On the other side of the Adriatic a tiny State has just become independent. It is Kosovo. It has 2 million inhabitants. There are 6 million of you in Campania and who knows how many millions around the world. You have a history that goes back thousands of years. The Italian State has reduced you to a dung heap. Become Kosovans. Have a referendum to become independent. I will support your campaign. Propose a plebiscite for the return of the Bourbons. You couldn’t be governed worse than this. They have even taken away your right to speak. The language of Naples has been recognised by UNESCO but not by the schools of Italy. Nobody eats buffalo mozzarella any more. They are afraid it is radioactive. Your agriculture is on its knees. You have to export tomatoes in secret. You have to mark tins of tomato paste : “made in China” so that you can put them on the contraband market in Europe. The Governor of Venice has started an advertising campaign in Germany. To explain to all Germans that the region of Venice is different from Campania. Caorle is better than Ischia and than Capri. Civilisation stops at the Piave: once it murmured, now it vomits the mayor Gentilini.
Campania is a political laboratory. What happens here happens in the whole of Italy. The distance between the citizens and the institutions is no longer there. They have brought in the knowing truncheon. The one that thinks about it and then strikes the women and the old people with their hands up in Pianura and in Savignano Irpino. The almost-knowing truncheon of the G8 in Genoa, of the Val di Susa, has evolved with you, it has found mature representation, more democratic.
Tenímmoce accussí: ánema e core...nun ce lassammo cchiù, manco pe' n'ora...stu desiderio 'e te mme fa paura…

Sorry. I want to ask for your pardon for the Acerra incinerator. For Impregilo. For our politicians chosen by the national parties. For Veronesi who’s at the top of Veltroni’s list in Lombardy and is three years older than De Mita. For Prodi who wants to make you a gift of three new incinerators. In Lombardy there are tens of incinerators, the roads are clean, but there’s a frightening occurrence of cancers. I beg your pardon for the illnesses due to radioactive waste buried in your lands without authority without any authority lifting a finger over 20 years. I beg your pardon for the dioxin and the nano particles from incineration that you breathe in together with the cancer. How many authorities have you paid with your taxes? Magistrates, Health Units, public administrators, Regions, Provinces, Towns, Mountain Communities, Police, Carabinieri, Forest Guards, Fire Officers, Town Police, Urban Cleansing, deputies, senators. All our employees. How many thousands of people have been given salaries to save you from this disaster? Why if there is Justice to avoid this Chernobyl of rubbish? What’s the use? Why are they there?
The world is looking at Naples. You are at a point of no return. Naples is at year zero. Like Berlin in 1945 after the bombing. It is a unique moment in history for starting again. For a Campana Renaissance. Take your past back into your hands, your language and the life of your children. Your territory. If you want you can change things. Nothing is impossible for those who are born here. What is decided in Rome is not important. You are important. The Italy of Beppe Grillo says “sorry” to you. The other Italy judges you and beats you up. History has gone by here and will come back soon. However, give it a hand.
For a New Renaissance.
Tenímmoce accussí: ánema e core...nun ce lassammo cchiù, manco pe' n'ora...stu desiderio 'e te mme fa paura..."

I have recently started following your sight, and watched the dvd of the show in Bologna in 2006. I am intriqued to say the least. I was considering buying Roberto Saviano's book, entitled GomorraH, and was curious to hear your thoughts...Now I see that he is running for Parliament with Veltroni, whom I believe you refer to as Topo Gigio. Is his book worth reading, and is it what he says the truth:

The time has come for the people of Southern Italy to assume the mantle of an independence movement in a united Europe. A new Kingdom of the Two Sicilies is an attainable goal in a modern Europe to shake the chains of an impractical and currupt union with Rome.

hi Beppe. I figured this might be a good way to reach you. I love Italy and love what you are doing over there. You inspire us! So listen, we are, also, in danger of turning into a big bad nation... an even bigger and badder nation than Italia.

Anyway, here's the idea, which i hope you'll post.

Nader's platform is impressive. Among other things, he has workable ideas about health care and carbon taxes that we are in DIRE need of. His ideas easily outstrip Obama and Clinton's in terms of solutions.

Unfortunately, I don't think third party is the way to go here. That was a catastrophe for us last time. BUT, best of all possible worlds; Nader is Obama's running mate. Holy shit, that would be a move. Perfect yin and yang. After all, Obama is the one who called Democrats to task for keeping status quo for the last few decades. Let's call him on his bluff. (He does have a hell of a bluff though. he's a killer poker player.) And Obama would be good for Nader too, bringing the motivational resources, the poise. And he would also tame Nader. For instance, impeaching Bush is on Nader's current agenda. Come on, Ralph, impeach Bush? Now? I mean we all know he's guilty, but the timing is off. Bush is too much of a lame duck for the fight to be worth it. That's not good politics and Obama knows politics.

i say Obama/Nader 08. progressive ideas AND charisma!

Next best running mate, Gore.

Thanks Beppe. Who knows, maybe this rumor will take hold and manifest into reality. It would surely be good for the health of the world.

Well, I seem to remember that Naples has had this problem of waste disposal for quite a long time. I recollect I was in Italy years ago when cholera started to appear over there, due to waste accumulation in the streets (was it a dustmen's strike or the disposal system once more in a strife?), then later hepatitis, and so on and so forth...
So the problem is still there, in Naples, in Campania, after all these years. Why?
Probably because the Italian Government has used the money allocated to resolve this problem to other purposes (their own personal enrichment?)

Whatever the reason, it stinks!

And you do well, Mr Grillo, to raise the people's awareness: but who's listening? The people, precisely. And not the Government...
They just send strawmen there, to show they're doing something about it. But it's just a smoke screen, that's all.

And it still stinks!

The Bourbons just passed the keys to the Savoy House, who passed it on to the New Republic & the Mafia Inc.: same show, different greedy clowns.

It does stink, doesn't it..?

Hello there,
It has been proven over and over again, that Italian Public Institutions do not work, they usually Irresponsible, waist all the money allocated and all the employee are Incompetent and selected based on Nepotism.
Look at the plentiful examples:
1) IRI (Has to be No. 1 bad example!)
2) Alitalia
3) Treni Italia
4) Anas
5) Autostrade
6) Sviluppo Italia (23 Billions black hole!)
7) Turismo Italia net site (They can’t even manage a simple net site for 35 Mil. Closed down?)
8) Infinite examles
Government should only Legislate and Supervise the Implementation of the Laws.
The five Field of Government:
1) Law and Justice
2) Defence
3) Education
4) Energy and Development
5) Health and Social Security
Everything else should be deregulated and managed by Private Enterprises, and Government Institution or Agencies, should only supervise and assure compliance to the laws.
They are stupid, incompetent irrational and last but not least they are not cognizant of whatever Agency they are in charge of.
Just imagine Mr. Mastella managing the Justice Department?
Mr. Di Pietro, the Transport Agency (A lawyer for goodness sake?)
Mr. Rutelli Agency of Art and Tourism (Not sure what he is, although he has 3 Universities Diplomas, and all Americans??)
Misr. Turco, run the Health Minister (Not sure but she is not a Doctor, Luminary Surgeon or anything in between?)
The moral of Italian story, is that for too long Agencies have been run by Incompetent Irresponsible Inept Politicians just because they were in charged with that Agency for political reasons, not functional.
Agencies of the Government have to be run stand alone by Professionals, not amateur Politicians for 11 months on the average.
Like the Bank of Italy, is run by a Professional, not a Politicians with an each to become a Money Planner for the Country.
Rest my case, let Mr. Bassolino and Jervolino run the Campania region and check the results a decade later.
Are you surprised, I most definitely “NOT”.
The future looks bright wear shades.

Its all well and good blaming napolis' current rubbish situation on the north of italy or other countries dumping their crap there but who let them??

why has this situation been going on for so long? because someone is earning from it thats why.

why is rubbish still not divided for recycling? why has there been protests and unrest?

obvioulsy the mafia still has a strong say in what happens and what doesnt happen in naples.

the government has abandoned the people there.

its shocking!!
