Address by Hu Jintao, President of China

Hu_Jintao.jpg

Address by Hu Jintao, President of China to Mr. Richard Gere, Mr. Beppe Grillo, Ms. Nancy Pelosi and others.

”It is important that opinion leader, like you, know the real truth about Tibet.
The ancient city of Lhasa is covered in gala decorations with red flags flying in the Potala Square and the Yarlung Zangbo River gurgling delightfully. We members of the delegation from the Central Government, together with cadres and people of all ethnic groups in Tibet, are holding this grand celebration to mark the 57th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet with joy and elation.
Fifty seven years ago, the CPC Central Committee and Comrade Mao Zedong, having correctly assessed the situation, made a far-sighted, resolute and significant policy decision to liberate Tibet peacefully. The Central People's Government and the former local government of Tibet signed the Agreement on Measures for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet. The peaceful liberation of Tibet was a major event in modern Chinese history and an epoch-making turning point in the course of development in Tibet. It symbolized that Tibet once and for all cast off the yoke of imperialist aggression and that the great unity of the Chinese nation and its great reunification cause have entered a new period of development. It ushered in a new era in which Tibet would turn from darkness to light, from backwardness to progress, from poverty to affluence and from seclusion to openness.
Over the past 57 years, Tibet has achieved a leap forward in the historical development of social systems and embarked on a socialist road. With the abolition of feudal serfdom, under which the Tibetan people had long been suppressed and exploited, millions of erstwhile serfs who did not even have the minimum of human rights have now stood up and become masters of their own fate. Today people of all ethnic groups are fully enjoying political, economic, cultural and other rights and having complete control of their destiny.
Over the past 57 years, Tibet has made substantial headway in its economic development, and the living standards of its people have improved markedly. Through democratic reform, socialist transformation and reform and opening-up, the social productive forces of Tibet have been emancipated and developed in an unprecedented manner. Over the past 57 years, the socialist spiritual civilization in Tibet has been steadily enhanced and society has moved forward in an all-round way. Educational, scientific and technological, cultural, public health and other social undertakings have been developing vigorously. People of all ethnic groups in Tibet have generally had enhanced political awareness, higher ethical standards and scientific and educational levels. The fine traditional culture in Tibet has not only been protected, inherited and carried forward, but also substantiated to reflect people's new lives and meet the new requirements of social development.
Over the past 57 years, solidarityamong all ethnic groups in Tibet has been constantly strengthened and social stability there has been maintained on the whole. People's freedom of religious belief has been fully respected and protected. People of all ethnic groups have worked in unity and succeeded in foiling the separatist and disruptive activities of the Dalai clique and anti-China forces in the world time and again, and thus safeguarded stability in Tibet and national unity and state security.
The course of 57 years of storms and vicissitudes has brought to light a great truth: It is only under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, only in the embrace of the big family of the motherland and only by firmly taking the socialist road with Chinese characteristics that Tibet can enjoy today's prosperity and progress and an even better tomorrow. This is the most important conclusion that we have drawn from the 57 years of Tibet 's development and also the fundamental principle that must be followed in building and developing Tibet in the days to come.
Tibet is a beautiful and richly endowed region of our great motherland. The industrious and talented people of all ethnic groups in Tibet have, in a long historical development, made outstanding contributions to the creation of a glorious culture of the Chinese nation and creation of a unified multi-ethnic country. In the last half a century in particular, the Tibetan people have written brilliant chapters in the development and progress of Tibet and added new glory to the big family of our socialist motherland.
I am proud to invite you to the Beijing Olympic Games. It will be a great opportunity to see the progress and the development of China. 胡锦涛 Hu Jintao

As usual...

...as usual, Mr. Cricket peddles hype, not analysis.

His simplistic and hysterical ways work wonders with the simple souls.

As usual, when facts are not pleasant, it is wiser to discuss form over substance.Whatever the style of this letter and whoever wrote it,yes or no,prior to its latest invasion, Tibet was a theocraty and serfdom was part of its society? An affirmative answer would not justify its invasion under international law but under US self interest unilateral laws, invasion of an independent country to secure democracy is a moral obligation. What else did the Chinese have done which is worse than Irak not to mention the occupation of Palestine?

The "Chinese message" is annoying. Are we serious here or are we playing in the sandbox? If that speech is authentic then Beppe should have introduced it as such. If it's posted for a laugh or for some other reason then it's bullshit. What the hell is the aim of that "message" presented as it is? If that "message" is not true than it can be construed as a misrepresentation (close to lying)using make-believe words, sentiments; ideas attributed to someone who has not thought of them nor said them. We're standing under a Niagara Falls of bullshit as it is: let's not make it bigger.

I am not going to judge the language and prose used to share their opinion of what is occcuring in China but will state that the profane language is not, what I believe, His Holiness the Dalai Lama would appreciate or tolerate. The Chinese can say whatever they please about improvements in the "Motherland" and how all the different groups within Tibet have formed to make up a beautiful union, except fot those loyal to the Dalai Lama. We all know that is an untruth. I did enjoy, however, how the speaker went from calling Tibet an independent state but then quickly changes their status to, "Region" within China. What rubbish! I will only state that we all, more or less, can cipher what is and what is not, true, if one has a brain, but one does not need, in order to express anger, use words that undermine not only the writer but the cause itself.

Mediobanca Denies Report Bank Planning to Join Bid for Alitalia
2008-03-27 06:46 (New York)

By Alessandra Migliaccio
March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Mediobanca SpA said it has no plans to join a bid for Alitalia SpA, denying a newspaper report that the investment bank may join a bid for the unprofitable Italian airline.
Mediobanca is not studying a joint bid with others, nor is it planning to buy shares in Alitalia, a spokeswoman for Mediobanca, who declined to be named because of company policy, said in a phone interview.
Italian newspapers including La Stampa reported comments by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who said Mediobanca is interested in joining a bid for Alitalia along with oil company Eni SpA, the Benetton family and businessman Salvatore Ligresti.
Air France-KLM Group is currently in exclusive talks to buy the government's controlling stake in Rome-based Alitalia.
Berlusconi, the frontrunner in national elections next month, opposes the French bid and has called for an Italian alternative.
Eni Chief Executive Officer Paolo Scaroni told reporters in Rome today that joining a bidding group for Alitalia is ``not on Eni's agenda today.''

I cannot understand how in the third millenium
people can support a theocracy.
How a free country can be ruled by monks and
priests! They talk nicely in front of the media
but in the real world they will act like the
holy inquisition.
Immagine our country ruled by the fanatic of
COMUNIONE E LIBERAZIONE.Under the D.L. Tibet
will be the same.

Berlusconi is a man who hungers for money and thirsts for power. His nature is fueled by the only law he recognizes: greed. He craves to be desired as much as he craves riches. He is the star of a caste endowed with all the rights and privileges of a democratic system tailored to hood-wink the masses.

Please Mr.President, let Tibetans choose their own political destiny.

Posted by: LP | March 27, 2008 12:06 AM

From the book Mao - The Unknown Story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday:
1. Mao became a Communist at the age of 27 for purely pragmatic reasons: a job and income from the Russians.
2. Far from organizing the Long March in 1934, Mao was nearly left behind by his colleagues who could not stand him and had tried to oust him several times. The aim of the March was to link up with Russia to get arms. The Reds survived the March because Chiang Kai-shek let them, in a secret horse-trade for his son and heir, whom Stalin was holding hostage in Russia.
3. Mao grew opium on a large scale.
4. After he conquered China, Mao's over-riding goal was to become a superpower and dominate the world: "Control the Earth," as he put it.
5. Mao caused the greatest famine in history by exporting food to Russia to buy nuclear and arms industries: 38 million people were starved and slave-driven to death in 1958-61. Mao knew exactly what was happening, saying: "half of China may well have to die."
Is this what Hu Jintao calls Socialist Spiritual Civilization? Mao's portrait and Mausoleum are still prominently displayed in Tiananmen Square and Tibetan and Chinese people can take very little comfort from it..

Posted by: Mark | March 26, 2008 11:15 PM

Is this a joke? A parody? Or actually Mr.Hu has seriously written such a tragicomic message? I suppose humorism is not a strong point of socialist spirituality! But at least I now know that there is such a thing as a socialist spirituality. I guess next time I have deeply felt doubts about the meaning of life, and I am in need of spiritual support, I will search for the wisdom of Comrade Mao, and learn how to recover faith by oppressing and torturing the unfaithful enemies of the great socialist spiritual civilization. Isn't it time for a real "peaceful liberation of Tibet"? Free Tibet and Free China!

A film that I found interesting - even though it had been worked on here and there - about Tibet, is Kundun of Martin Scorsese..
