A Letter from Umberto Veronesi

Umberto Veronesi has written me a letter which I am publishing and for which I thank him.
Veronesi says he is “saddened by the continual attacks that you aim at me and my activity”, but my criticism has not been in reference to his activity as an oncologist and at the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia. And I am convinced of the good of some of his initiatives, cited in the letter, like those relating to asbestos, benzene and smoking.
On this point I have really no reason to object, and exactly for the story of Umberto Veronesi and his competence on the causes of tumours, I am amazed at his position in relation to incinerators.
Veronesi has declared that they have no effect on health. He calls them “termovalorizzatori”. Veronesi states that: “there are many research studies that prove they are not dangerous” and that “my position stems from the time when I was Minister of Health … in the discussions with experts about the problem of refuse, they informed me that the latest generation of “termovalorizzatori” are a necessity for the country and the risks for the country are minute”.
Veronesi invites me to “suspend the insults and restore a climate of civil debate”.
I am accepting his proposal with enthusiasm.
I am inviting him to a public discussion broadcast on the Internet in live streaming. Let him decide the place. I will deal with the equipment and the recording of the event.
Let him gather the experts “who have informed him” (who are they?), let him bring his “many research studies”. I will come with my consultants and I will cite my sources.
The citizens can form their own opinion and can use their own heads to decide whether incinerators are death factories or aerosol producers.
I wait confidently for a positive response from Umberto Veronesi.

This is what Detroit,USA and Naples, Italy have in common: lead story about incinerator in the city and necessity for its closure

I really look forward to see if Pr. Veronesi will ever accept a honest debate on matter.
As reported in Dr. Gentilini’s video interview, the majority of case studies prove that incinerators do increase CANCER weigh upon nearby population and, new generation or not, they act like ‘Poison Factories’ producing dangerous substances (spec. dioxin) that are carcinogenic.

Waste sorting and door-to-door household collection through a kerbside collection schemes base (curbside collection) are better ways to handle problem. The ready to use new technique developed on this side are proving to be more handy and successful strategies then the much more expensive and DANGEROUS incinerators projects...

Note should be taken on new CNR project
'Total house waste recycling' (THOR)...

I find very impressive when Dr. Gentilini cites world famous oncologist Pr. Dominique Belpomme and talks about newly introduced article n.5 in Medical Deontological Code (2007) that in short states as a DOCTOR’S DUTY is to consider environment as the main factor involved in public health, and is to contribute actively for the proper use of environmental resources so to grant future generations of our same life opportunities…

I report below part of ARTAC press release at http://www.artac.info/static.php?op=ConfPressREACHen.txt&npds=1)

"We are treating cancer patients, and not the environment that is itself under threat", regrets Pr. Dominique Belpomme, oncologist-chairman of the French Association for Research and Treatments Against Cancer. [..]

No, cancer does NOT spare children! And those affected are more and more numerous each year. Just as worrying, in Europe, 1 child out of 7 suffers from asthma, 15% couples cannot have children, and the number of congenital malformations is growing. The development of all these diseases seems to be linked mainly to the toxic role of chemical pollutants in our environment [..]

It is now up to European political decision-makers to prove their determination in slowing down this epidemic of new diseases [..]

Due to the environmental origin of many diseases, prevention, nowadays, is the responsibility of us all. If governing means anticipating, let's save future generations [..]

The toxic role of chemical pollutants in our environment in the development of cancers, sterility, congenital malformations diseases draws my attention to a dated but very interesting article by journalist Marco Lillo, published on Italian newspaper ‘l’Espresso’ on 25th october 2001, titled ‘LA FABBRICA DELLE MALATTIE’ (The Diseases Factory) that talks about the chemical group holdings (Ved, Coemi..) of the today just elected new Environmental Minister, Stefania Prestigiacomo..

David, The Globla Peace Index is put together by the Institute for Economics and Peace and the Economist Intelligence Unit. GPI, was founded by Austrialian international technology entrepreneur Steve Killelea -just in case you think the Index has leftist leanings.

The Index is based on 24 indicators selected by an international panel of academics, business people, philantropists and peace institutions. It does not pretend to be an accurate measure of how much peace there is in a country, but does give a point of reference for comparing countries' "peaceful living".

If you google "Global Peace Index Rankings" you'll see that most of the top 15 countries with less violence have strong and efficient welfare systems and transparent democracies.

When I saw Italy's ranking relatively high I had to wonder why countries ranking below Italy don't consider "security" as THE BIG ISSUE that it is in Italy'? Italians are scare out of their wits for the same situations found in other European countries.

Yet, Germans haven't attacked and set fire to Rom's camps; no European country monitors a specific minority through a special commission; the French are not hunting down the North Africans like the police and the mafia are doing with "illegal immigrants".

I live in a country of immigrants, and near a metropolitan centre with the usual urban crime found in all other metropolitan centres of the World. Black, white, yellow and the rest of the color of the rainbow are here and even though racism exists it's not the rampant racism witnessed daily in Italy, and nobody attacks nobody's neighbourhood.

Tourists coming back from Italy are astounded by the beauty they've experienced. But have a hard time understanding the acts of intolerance, racist insults, and open acts of discrimination they heard and saw in Italy.

They say, "Had the racism we saw in Italy happened here all politicians would have resigned and media gone nuts". On the politicians? They are exaggerating. On the media? They are not. Media would have gone nuts. Italians are amiable conversationists, they love to talk, especially about "national crime". They can tell you a million crime stories where the "outsider" is always the bad guy. -Gomorra, Saviano's book, is the exception.

Forty or Thirty years "vu cumpra'" was the scapegoat of choice; a decade later Blacks were the bad guys; s decade later Albanians spooked the country, then came the Romanians and now the Roms -whose camps are set on fire.

Once in awhile, when in Italy, I'm asked how Italians are perceived abroad. A few times the "interviewer" put words into my mouth, "Italiani brava gente, vero"? "Vero" I would answer. and I wasn't lying. Today, I wouldn't know what to answer. Why would that be? Why, all of the sudden, many Italians turned ugly? Did sombedoy laced their drinking water? Who says foreigners are about to take Italy over? You know what I think Dave? Somebody is playing the "blood" card. Somebody must have remembered,"Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer!" And brought it back in disguise during the last election. campaign.

Ok Beppe!!

Can’t wait to talk to Mr Veronesi in live streaming for a public discussion.

It could actually be a great occasion to show him some “stunts” you shamelessly sent here in the past such as the following ones:

h t t p : / / w w w. beppegrillo .i t / 2005/12/ferramenta_ambu . h t m l

h t t p: / / w w w . beppegrillo . i t / 2006/03/la_ricerca_imba.h t m l

h t t p : / / w w w . beppegrillo . it/2006/07/cervello_a_la_c . h t m l

(without space)

As a matter of fact, it is not an accident that, since the opening of his blog, occurred at beginning of 2005, Mr GRILLO’s policy or strategy to be continously in the spotlight so as to attract new hits and links on his website (and consequently climbing Technorati ranking further) has never been changed, namely blasting away a volley of tricky questions, abuse and comments against somebody’s stances about trivial issues (usually expressed by an unpopular Italian politician or even by the Holy Father himself) or facts concerning their private life or even worse publishing posts based on sheer stunts, unfounded rumours or spoof stories in the proper sense of the term in order to draw attention to his blog, rather than focusing on the achievement of practical objectives or goals for the sake of ordinary people in favour of whom every Mr Grillo’s campaign is officially called for, according to his words.

Towards the catastrophe with optimism (and without shame).

Cheers.

G.V.

I would like to take issue with LP , on the subject of security in Italy . LP , I don't know where you live ; I am English , but have lived some years in Italy .
In general terms Italy might be classified as a safe and peaceful country ; isn't 28th rather far down the list . People are always blaming polititians and the media for scaremongering or whatever .
Italy has a vast coastline and mountainous borders to the north . Italy is overun with Illegal immigrants , from Africa the middle east ,far east , Albania , Romania , Ukrain , Russia , who find it the easiest entry to Europe . Skilled people go north to Germany and Britain . Each nationality seems to have it's own Maffia far less discreet than Italian Maffias . Italy is infested with criminals and criminal gangs , who are inhumanly ruthless .
People are justified in not feeling safe in their homes or on the street, or driving their nice car on the autostrada . You mention the ROM who create the filthiest, rat infested encampments all around the major cities . They train there children in the arts of cat burglary and pickpocketing . You aren't safe even to go shopping , for the danger of losing your wallet or being held at knifepoint to give your money and jewels . Rom on motorcyles roam the streets looking for unsuspecting women , whose handbag they can rip from them , pulling them over onto the street , as they pass by . Sometimes the police are quickly alerted and there are shootings ,likened to the Wild West in the centre of the city of Florence . Owners of Villas and Farmhouses are raided in the night by gangs of Albanese , who are not afraid to kill the family , if they show any opposition to giving up all their valuables . Cars like Mercedes and BMW are bumped on the autostrada . If the owner stops on the hard shoulder to see the damage , they are attacked and robbed of their car , which will be sped away to Albania , Romania or Ukrain .
You may have Italian origins , but you evidently have not lived in Italy for some time . I note you evidently have socialist leanings and happily blame Berlusconi and Bossi for scaremongering on the former's TV channels . Don't be fooled , Italy may be seen as a peaceable safe country in world terms , but domestically it is very dangerous . With Human Rights to contend with politicians are rendered impotent to remedy the situation .

According to the Global Peace Index Italy's state of peace and security is ranked 28th out of 140 nations analysed. That ranking places Italy in the top group of the most peaceful and secure countries on Earth! Yet, Italians are running scare by the perception that Italy is infested by criminals. Could that perception have been created by Berlusconi's media empire? Could the recent attacks against the Rom people be the direct result of pre-election fear-mongering spewed by Bossi's party? Could Berlusconi and Bossi be responsible of turning "Italiani brava gente" into "Italiani razzisti e xenofobi"? It sure makes one wonder about the power of media.
