I advise you not to read the book: “Morti Bianche”{literally “white deaths” or deaths in the workplace} It’s a dangerous book. The witness statements of the families of the victims at work, assassinated at work, are so shocking that after that you will no longer be the same. After that, if your mother, daughter, sister go off to work, you will be counting the hours that separate you from their return. Perhaps, it will be spontaneous for you to ask them to let you go with them to protect them.
When a person dies, the word most frequently used is “fatality”. When a person dies, the adjective most frequently used is “tragic”. Tragic fatality. 1300 tragic fatalities every year, 50,000 invalids every year. Thousands of families reduced to poverty, widows with young children to bring up, to feed, to love, treated like beggars. Liquidated with a few thousand euro.
We are not in the Middle Ages, we are in the New Italian Age. At a point in time and space in which if a Rumanian rapes a woman, the country is indignant, but if 5 labourers die, at the most, and anyway for only a few hours, the country is sad. A tear flows down from the Stage of the Authorities.
Our Modern Age is not born from nothing, it’s origin is clear as the sun: filthy lucre. The death of a man is a risk for the enterprise. How much does it cost to make plant safe, the training for their own employees, the equipment to keep them safe? Much more, enormously much more, than the eventual compensation for the death of a person.
The companies know that, they take that into account. It can happen. In that unfortunate case, the minimum necessary is paid out. The law companies against the lawyer of the widow or the mother. It should be the State to provide legal protection for the families of those who fall.
If the death of an employee were to cost more to a company than investment in safety, almost no one would die. It’s the economy of death. If it’s worth little, then you can take the risk. It’s the price of life that is worth less than production.
The triumph of the self-regulation of the market. The lack of rules. The classification of blood. A soldier injured in Afghanistan deserves the front page of the newspaper. Three who die at work, a little square on the fifteenth page.
The Maroni law (done when he was Minister of Labour), the law 30, called the Biagi law has a great responsibility in the “morti bianche”. A precarious worker is a natural candidate to die at work. There are two reasons. The first is that he cannot complain about the conditions in which he finds himself, or he would be immediately sacked.
A survivor of the Thyssen Krupp blaze declared that the extinguishers were empty, that the shifts were punishing, but he couldn’t say anything if he wanted to keep his job. Anyone who has a family thinks about the children, bows his head and hopes that it won’t affect him. The second reason is that a precarious worker has no time for instruction or training.
He’s taken on for a few months, or even for a few weeks. It’s not economical to invest in someone who is passing through. Many “morti bianche” happen in the first few days at work, among precarious workers, among the non-Europeans in sub-sub-contract with at the top of the chain, public administration officials.
Buy the book "Morti Bianche" and you set the price.

Yes,i agree with MX. what he said about Asia is absolutely true. All these are because of globalization.

Anyhow thanks for the blog.

keep it up.

Well done BEPPE!

After earning buckets of money with your bestseller "MODERN SLAVES", full of blunders such as your assertion at beginning of the book that Mr Biagi's law was the cause of temporary employees, you decided to exploit another Italian social evil in order to get even reacher than that you are already now.

So the question is:

Was this blog really launched on the web 3 years ago to inform Italian people about tricky issues hushed up by fawning Italian media or its real unofficial purpose was in fact just to advertise and sell Mr GRILLO's products (DVD, BOOKS, SHOWS TICKETS and so on)??

I have some doubts about that, taking into account the controversial way in which this blog is run in the ITALIAN VERSION where just the aligned bloggers have the right to post their comments without being banned all the time, even at late night, by the staff members disguised as ordinary bloggers!

Cheers.

G.V.

It is all a matter of ethics

We are the market. We buy stuff manufactured in China because it is cheap and want to keep our safe jobs in Italy?
You want safe jobs? Buy only items manufactured by companies that value safety. It will cost 3x and that means that you will be 3x poorer.

Ever heard about Buddhism?

To Massimo Deiana
Here in USA, Nike Corp. found out about kids exploitation in its Asian factories and this started a trend with other companies to inspect their factories, looking for the same problem.
Now, it's not completely mandatory but the same companies are making sure that their customers know that this will not happen again by writing in their ads about their "certified" factories abroad.
Well, if we look at this, we could ask for a law that makes mandatory for those Italian companies to check for safety equipment, rules and protection for their workers in all their factories, including the ones abroad and, once found out their compliance, to inform their customers about it.
In this way 2 important things will happen:
1) Those companies will think twice before moving their production equipment abroad (or engage in activities with other companies which are not compliant) because safety will have its costs abroad as well.
2) In case production will move abroad anyway, those workers will be protected by this certification.

If you touch them in their wallet they will make sure to fix this problem.

Vaffancola Introduced in Italy to Pay Homage to Beppe Grillo's “F*ck Off” Day - September 8.
****************************************************

Note the serendipitous slight difference between the Italian crude swear word of "Vaffanculo" and the new cola named "Vaf Fan Cola".

The new Italian Cola pays homage to Beppe Grillo's an Italian activist, comedian, and actor, “a distinctly Italian combination of Michael Moore and Stephen Colbert.” who has declared war on crooked politics in Italy. Grillo declared the 8th of September to be a new unofficial Italian holiday called V-Day (Vaffanculo or “F*ck Off” Day), motivating some two million people in two hundred and twenty cities across Italy (and many abroad) to celebrate V-Day as an unofficial new national holiday.

Grillo’s purpose in staging the highly successful V-Day event was that of persuading Italians to sign a petition calling for the introduction of a Bill of Popular Initiative to remove members of the Italian Parliament who have criminal convictions of any kind from their office. (At present there are twenty-four convicted criminals currently serving as senators and representatives in the Italian parliament, or as Italian representatives in the European Parliament).

VAFFANCOLA

[06 Jul 08]
This morning’s online edition of La Repubblica brings the humorous announcement of a new soft drink that’s growing in popularity in the Eternal City. Called Vaffancola and flavored with coconut (the same small producer makes a classic cola version, we wonder if the drink is an homage to Beppe Grillo and his famous V-Days?

If you’ve not been keeping up with Italy’s numerous protests and political problems over the past year or so, here’s what you need to know to understand the relationship between this strangely named soda and Beppe Grillo: Grillo, an Italian activist, comedian, and actor, has declared war on crooked politics in Italy. As part of his spirited protest against corruption in Italian society, he writes one of the world’s most read blogs (in which he’s dubbed Berlusconi “the psycho-dwarf”) and last year, he declared the 8th of September to be a new unofficial Italian holiday called V-Day (Vaffanculo or “F*ck Off” Day), motivating some two million people in two hundred and twenty cities across Italy (and many abroad) to celebrate V-Day as an unofficial new national holiday.

If you’re interested, it’s well worth reading Tom Mueller’s “Letter from Italy,” published in the New Yorker in Feburary 2008. Mueller calls Grillo “a distinctly Italian combination of Michael Moore and Stephen Colbert.” And, on these hot summer days in Rome, you’ll want to keep your eye out for a refreshing Vaffancola.

Dear Beppe good day from India.
I must to thank you for pay so much care about US, I mean Italian worker inside an outside Italy.
I'm India erecting machinery for an Italian Company; I'm 27 years doing this job. I spend most of my time in Asia, so I had the chance to accumulate a deep understanding of these Countries’ life.
After the thanks I wish to point something at your attention: the concept is very easy: we (I mean all western workers) are facing a very big deal of competition from the people living here. Yes, I know, it is the global market's result, but this means we are obliged to deal with it.
This is meaning that we are competing with guys willing to work for some 3US$ a day. YES only 3.
Do you know what happens here when one of these guys has an accident? He just got FIRED! THAT'S IT! I see every day people falling from roofs or be killed by machinery, they work wearing slippers and loose wear, and they die? OK there is plenty of replacement: So much for it! I know that's not good, but a lot of Italian industrialists are moving their business here because of the freedom they can enjoy. They are not even in the need to invest money; they just place the order to a local company and trade.
This is killing Italian jobs; i still work in a company which used to have some 150 employees, only 8 left. No young after me.. I'm teaching some local people to take my place.
Because of that i ask you to quit pay so much attention to us: it does not help.
Sorry for that, but it is too late now to stop globalization.
We are the price to be paid from western Countries.
So much for the syndicates!
Sorry for show no hope. If I will die I hope it will not be too painful.
Ciao and thanks again for your blog.
I always enjoy it a lot.
