The Calendar of Lay Saints 2010

The Calendar of Lay Saints 2010
(1:46)
finalesantilaici.jpg
In his book “Qualunque cosa succeda” {Whatever may happen} dedicated to Giorgio his father, Umberto Ambrosoli has written: “Just recently I have found out that there is a calendar that every day gives honour to the memory of an Italian who, through his work, has done good to our country and for this very reason, has died: killed. It’s called “Calendario dei santi laici” {the Calendar of Lay Saints} dedicated to people that remind us “ that man is born free and not as a servant. Courageous and not contemptible.” In this calendar, the date of 12 July is the day of Giorgio Ambrosoli [ ….] In fact, he believed so much in his own liberty and in respect for the laws that rule over the common good, as to arrive at the sacrifice of his own life so that that good could be saved.”

The Calendar of Lay Saints has arrived at its fourth edition, dedicated to Paolo Borsellino’s “little red book”. The number of people to be remembered increases, year by year. Just the number of them shows that in Italy there is always a permanent civil war going on, not between “"Guelphs and Ghibellines” or between “fascists and anti-fascists”, but between honest and dishonest folk.
From my preface to the Calendar of Lay Saints 2010:
We have to take our hearts into the mine. A deep mine, full of witness statements, of diamonds that shine. To go down into its guts we need to have a heart nearby, like a lantern. In its long tunnels, for its full extent, there are Lay Saints. Saints that are more by accident than by their own will. At times a diamond, a Lay Saint, comes back up to the surface, but his light offends our eyes. They are no longer used to Giorgio Ambrosoli, Giuseppe Impastato, Rosario Livatino, don Peppe Diana. The Lay Saints are our dark mirror. Hundreds and hundreds of victims. Each in his own way, often unknowing, always fearless, lost their life for an idea of the State that perhaps only existed in their conscience. To listen to their voices, read their stories and continue to live in the indifference of a country consigned to its worst instincts is difficult, and for many it’s impossible. It’s better to cancel out their existence, their civil witness statements behind the easy definition of “hero”. A hero is an exceptional individual. For all of us, common citizens, the exception proves the rule. However, in the mine, there’s a light that gets ever brighter. Paolo Borsellino’s light. A diamond buried together with the motives for his assassination. Near to him, a little red book that perhaps will cast light in the starless darkness of this Italy.

The Calendar of Lay Saints 2010 can be downloaded for free or purchased in the coffee-table-version at a price that’s up to you.

Fanfares announced the growth of the Italian GDP and the government was quick to announce the end of the recession. The economy is growing. Yes, but as good as the news of economic recovery is, the bad news is that the number of jobless people is increasing. It's not normal. Normally, GDP and unemployment don't grow at the same time. What's happening? President Obama went on TV and explained to Americans that GDP grew out of the savings factories made by having fewer workers producing more. I haven't seen a minister or other politicians explain Italians the growth of their GDP and unemployment the way Obama did. But italians will be seeing Berlusconi on TV. But he won't be talking about the economy. He is going to talk about the save-Silvio's-ass-law ("short trial"). He is going use his bullshit know-how to convince Italians that bad is good for them. I hope Italians see through the con job their Prime Minister is about to spring on them.
