The Raft of the Medusa
(2:48)
"
As long as the boat still floats, let it go... when the crisis comes, the bell will toll". Every historic moment has its own particular symbol. The symbol of the Italian Spring of 2010 is the boat. Addressing the businessmen of Confindustria,
Berlusconi said that "
we’re all in the same boat", and those in the audience were touching each other instead of applauding. That same evening, at the
OCSE meeting in Paris, he once again
touched on the nautical theme: referring to the
24 Billion Euro interim budget he said that "
We have steered the boat onto the right course" and that this is "
an immediate response to a sudden crisis ".
The psychodwarf was so obviously unprepared for this international event that has only been going on for the past four years because he was too busy with his Justice System reforms, which he claims were done "in the Country’s best interests". There is an old adage which says that in order to truly understand something you have to experience it first hand, but our Prime Minister is part of a category of people that are immune to the crisis, as are his companies and his offspring. While pension postponements and a three-year salary freeze for public servants were being announced in Rome, at Ancona,
Piersilvio Berlusconi was busy climbing aboard his new 37-metre, 18 million Euro yacht. Piersilvio christened the yacht in the usual manner, namely by shattering a bottle of bubbly against the yacht’s hull. For the time being, this is only his second yacht, his first being a slightly more modest, 30-metre, 10 million Euro vessel named "Suegno".
Just a few hours before 10 billion Euro of cuts to the Regional Administrations were announced in Rome, the Financial Police were busy with the
seizure of "
Force Blue", the 62-metre ocean-going mega-yacht belonging to
Flavio Briatore, who is accused of tax evasion amounting to 5 million Euro. Ms. Gregoraci was obliged to disembark, together with her son and all of the crew including cooks, sailors, personal trainer and masseuse. A traumatic event from which she will undoubtedly never fully recover. Just a month ago, although it feels like a lifetime,
Tremorti was denying all speculation regarding a 5 billion Euro summer interim budget, which has now swelled to 25 billion due to this "
sudden crisis" and may yet double, or even triple within the course of this year. Our public debt is totally out of control and now stands at 1,800 billion, 100 billion of which was accumulated in 2009 alone. The interest payable on Government Bonds is increasing, our GDP is decreasing and national misery is growing.
Looking back into Italy’s history we find yet another boat, a corvette, which took
Victor Emmanuel III to safety back in 1943. It was called the “
Baionetta.” The King, who was only about as tall as the psychodwarf anyway, fled the Country with his entire court, leaving Italy to its tragic fate. All of his assets had already been sent abroad prior to his departure. Now that Briatore’s “
Force Blue” is no longer available, what vessel will all of Berlusconi’s servants, lackeys, bards and arse creepers, escorts and pen pushers board? If it is up to us, I would suggest that they be put aboard a raft like the one of the
Medusa, a French frigate that sank in the last century. on which there was even talk of episodes of cannibalism. Just enough food, water and light clothing on board and off into the unknown and the adventure amongst the waves of the Mediterranean. Undoubtedly
Gasparri would survive in any event because who would be able to eat him without vomiting?
