The animals of Fukushima

Fukushima’s animals
(01:43)

The animals of Fukushima have stayed within the 30 Km contamination zone. Their masters have fled. All the animals are radioactive. No one can any longer leave the area. Three thousand cows, thirty thousand pigs, six hundred thousand chickens and an imprecise number of domestic animals. The dogs that have survived go up to the rare car with authorisation, in search of food. Around them there’s an unreal silence and abandoned houses. Almost all of the fowl have died. The cows and the calves, where there are no farms with automatic feeding machines, have died of hunger and thirst. According to the Japanese authorities, 70% of the pigs and 60% of the cattle have died. The owners of the livestock asked to be able to take the animals out of the radioactive territory or to be able to enter and perform some sort of euthanasia. Their requests were turned down for fear of contamination. A few ignored the prohibition and went into the prohibited zone to retrieve their dogs, but they were thus condemning themselves. The water in the sea at 30 kilometres from the nuclear reactor has a concentration of iodine-131 of 88.5 becquerels per litre, the highest recorded value up until now. The radioactivity is 2.2 times the maximum allowed for water in the outflow from nuclear reactors. The ichthyic fauna in the waters of the Pacific for dozens of kilometres near Fukushima is contaminated. The radioactivity will spread in an exponential way when the tiny prey are eaten by other fish. We’ll have to go along to the supermarket with a Geiger counter. We’ll even get used to that.
Fukushima is an updated version of George Orwell ‘s “Animal Farm” where the ones in command are the sewer rats instead of the pigs,. The ones that live by profiting at the expense of of the others, it doesn’t matter whether they are men or beasts. The ones who hide the risks, who use the media to give credit to their hypotheses that expose future generations to a desolate world. The sewer rats, when the air gets heavy, have the ability to hide away in their natural habitat that is the sewers. They disappear from circulation. Where are the unwitting Scajola, Ms Marcegaglia, the Fini of the “latest generation” of Italian reactors, Ms Prestigiacomo, the only Minister of the Environment in the world that after Fukushima declared that nuclear was to go ahead? Where are the rats of the atom like Veronesi and Chicco Testa? Where is that guy with criminal convictions called Scaroni from ENI? Nuclearists of my balls, where are you? If you delude yourselves that to annul the referendum, wait for a year to go by and then you can once more fuck up the Italians with the nuclear chorus you are mistaken. They will never give up (but is it in their interests?). Neither will we.

PS: I have published the book: "Spegniamo il nucleare. Manuale di sopravvivenza alle balle atomiche" {Let’s shut down nuclear. Survival Manual in the face of nuclear lies}. After reading this even the most convinced nuclearist (if he’s honest) will be converted.

I guess it would be definitely hard to transport those poor animals, the only way left was to kill them out of pity... not everyone can do that.

COLPEVOLI E VANNO EXTERMINATI

So, here goes Italy warring again. Even Napolitano gave Berlusconi's bombings his blessings. So much for the Italian Constitution. But, not to worry. It's only a "natural development" of the situation. Natural development of the situation? I thought the UN resolution was about enforcing a "no fly zone" while staying neutral. It was about destroying Libya's missile defenses and air force. That mission is accomplished, right? Oh, yes! It was also about protecting civilians in Benghazi. That was in February. Now, a civil war is raging. They're massacring each other. It makes one wonder if that civil war was encouraged by the rebels pleading for foreign intervention when Nato sided with them and began bombing Tripoli. Quite the "natural development!" And Italy is getting into the act. But, not to fear. Italy is not going to hurt anyone. Italy is different. No cluster bombs. Nope. Italian pilots use highly sophisticated and precision missiles. Have you ever heard of surgical strikes? Americans do surgical strikes in Afghanistan. OK, they miss the targets sometimes and children, women, old men die. But what are you going to do? It's war. "Bad things happen in wars" as Rumsfeld used to say. Italians will make sure "bad things don't happen." Italians hit the bull's eye everytime. And, anyway, if bad things should happen and a few Libyans happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, we'll chalk them down as the sequel to Graziani's genocide. And by the way, the deal was that not one NATO boot was to land in Libya. So, what are military advisors doing in Libya? That's how Americans got involved in Vietnam: they sent in military advisors. And now we know what happened. I hope that's not the case in Libya. I hope that's not a prelude to another Afghanistan.
