Hic Rodus, hic salta. The 5 Star MoVement is the son of a Utopia, of a form of politics without intermediation, without those self-referencing superstructures called “parties”. What is the substance of the parties? The organisation in factions, the physical structures, the territorial references, the packets of votes, the national, regional and provincial assemblies that put forward the lists of people to be elected, that take decisions for the voters, the leaders and the little leaders, public financing. Organisations of political antiquarianism. The MoVimento 5 Stelle (M5S) {5 Star MoVement} wants to break down every barrier between the citizen and the politician, between the person elected and the voter. The “Non-Statute” explains this in article 4. “The 5 Star MoVement is not a political party and it is not intended to become one in the future. It wants to be a witness to the possibility of bringing about an efficient and efficacious exchange of opinions and democratic encounter outside of party and associative ties and without the mediation of directive or representational organisms, recognising to all users of the internet the role of government and direction that is normally attributed to a few.” In the MoVement, there is a single and unique point of reference: the citizen. No one above him. No one below him. The plague of the so-called “middle management”, bosses, little bosses, head ponces and first row ballerinas ever ready for personal visibility and to be interviewed by the media would make it waste away and after a short time, extinguished. Hic Rodus, hic salta. Either a party or a movement of direct democracy. There is no third way. The MoVement was born free and it will stay free. Each list has been formed spontaneously. Each programme for each individual town has been defined autonomously. There’s been no veto placed on any candidate. The only rules of admission are to have a clean criminal record and not to be a member of a party. Two mandates and a return to normal activities. And that’s how it’ll be in the future. Each one is worth one. The councillor is worth as much as the citizens that voted for him, and the town councillor in Arborio is worth as much as a future senator. The M5S is an idea, not an ideology. The idea that the citizens are an active part of the society in which they live, of every decision that relates to them, that they participate in the running of the town, the Region, the State, as a service to the community. The M5S does not want to get 10% of the vote, but it wants 100% of the citizens to feel they have full rights to be a part of this country and they do not have to delegate decisions to others. They will never give up (but is it in their interests?). Neither will we.
