Take one evening in Genoa

Antonacci, Celentano, Don Gallo, Grillo, Paoli for Genoa

Cep di Genova (Genoa’s public housing estate) is a neighbourhood above the Heights of Pra' and of Voltri. Up there the last. Labourers, non-Europeans, new poor people. No tourist ever comes to these parts. The theatres of the centre of Genoa with their lights are far far away. In this spot, inside a concrete building, I was overcome with emotion. Crikey. It can even happen to me. But last night it even happened to Celentano, to Don Gallo, to Antonacci and to Paoli and not even his mother had ever seen him crying in his whole life. The difference was that there were people. The members of the public that participated in an evening of solidarity for Genoa. Most of the people are those that even have to count the cents when they go shopping and who donated 25 euro, the price of the entrance ticket, for Genoa. In this case, the last became the first. All the artistes performed as a civic duty. Those who contributed to the organisation didn’t ask for anything. Adriano, the prophet of anti-cement, of "Ragazzo della via Gluck" {The Boy from Gluck Street} and "Un albero di trenta piani" { A tree of thirty floors}, sang on stage after 17 years. He couldn’t say “no” to Don Gallo who performed rock with the energy of a young kid. Can I say this? It was beautiful! Really great! For me, it was an unforgettable show, gone by in silence. I don’t know of any newspaper having written about it the evening before, nor of a TV station that promoted it. The last cause fear. The energies that are born at the bottom terrorise this rotten system, responsible even for the death of Genoa.
The show was broadcast in direct streaming. Thanks to Google hundreds of thousands of people have seen it.
There was no advertising, no sponsors, no promotional messages, no exclusives. Anyone who wanted to (and you can still do so (*)) has given their support for Genoa. This is the future. The new passwords are solidarity, social participation, information and the possibility to transmit via the Internet without bribes or bosses. The event last night will not be an isolated event. I have said I’m available for Messina and for “Le Cinque Terre”, overwhelmed by mud and lack of care. Let the organisers make themselves known. They will never give up (but is it in their interests?). Neither will we.

And that slaughter to the nation
Shall steam up like inspiration,
Eloquent, oracular;
A volcano heard afar.

And these words shall then become
Like oppression’s thundered doom,
Ringing through each heart and brain
Heard again, again, again –

Rise like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you.
Ye are many. They are few.
