Veltrolandia

papalla.jpg

On a planet a long way away from the earth, there exists true democracy. It’s not the planet Papalla as some could think, in fact it’s called Veltrolandia. In this wonderful land that is not spherical in shape, but worm-shaped, everyone is better and they go to the cinema at least once a week.
Elections aren’t necessary. The candidate for Prime Minister is created by parthenogenesis. It’s the miracle of a great advanced democracy. The Elected One is recognised by signs. He is the sole candidate by acclamation of the party secretaries. He is talked about on the front pages of the newspapers and on the second and third pages. Every day he is interviewed about everything. He knows about knowledge. He is the Elected One…..
He is not a parliamentarian. He has not yet won the rigged Primaries (even there they cheat when it’s a matter of the Elected One). In spite of this everyone loves him. The Confindustria and the Trades Unions, (even in Veltrolandia that’s how they are called) have a natural instinct to support him, for the interests of the citizens and also for their own interests. More than anyone, the Government straight away considers him the leader destined to lead the people. His programmes are sublime. His wishes are proudly taken to the Council of Ministers by Romano Prodi, a case of someone with the same name as the terrestrial Prodi. Harmony reigns in Veltrolandia. The people know that nothing is better than their democracy. Comparative advertising does not exist in that happy planet. The choice is always one, it’s very good and abundant, and of the parties.
The Elected One will come to Italy next year together with the students of his planet to raise awareness about Third World poverty. He will offer himself as an abusive windscreen cleaner in Rome’s Piazza Venezia and then he’ll be off to the Maldives.

Cementing the Aeolian Islands

video_eolie_EN.jpg

The Aeolian Islands are very beautiful. The gods lived there and the traces of their ancient presence can still be seen. I hope that the Aeolian people won’t be offended, but the islands don’t belong only to them. They are world heritage. recognised by UNESCO. For this reason the appeal I’m publishing is for all the citizens of the world. I know that many Aeolian people have emigrated to Australia. And you too from “Down Under” make yourselves heard. Our Minister of the Environment is invited to intervene to earn his salary.
The cement party in Italy must no longer find followers or political representation. There’s the need for something else, for spaces, for deconstruction, for the demolition of second and third houses lived in for two weeks a year. Of the recovery of the “Bel Paese”. In certain towns only those residing there are allowed to build. It seems like an initiative to be copied.
The blog is available for a reply from the Mayor of Lipari.

Dear Beppe,
In the name of a group of fellow citizens I am writing to you from Lipari, in the Aeolian Archipelago.
The Aeolian Archipelago, included in UNESCO’s World Heritage sites and recognised among the “Treasures of Humanity” is an enormously environmentally ugly risk! And I’m not talking about an abusive villa or an extra hotel. …
With the reconfirmation of the outgoing Mayor in the last local elections, there’s the danger of an unprecedented destruction in relation to the environment and to the landscape of the archipelago.
The Forza Italia Mayor, Mariano Bruno (a former winner of the Legambiente black flag) is getting ready to launch a massive project: the construction of a Mega-port that would cover all the coast of the historical centre of Lipari, involving one of the most beautiful bays of the archipelago and destroying it for ever. Apart from the physical destruction of the maritime centre of Marina Lunga, in front of the coast they are to build a 4.5 m wall, that will block the view of the sea.
The plan sees the construction of volumes and surfaces in cement that would increase that of the current port by a factor of ten. And the construction of a big commercial complex that would occupy a stretch of quayside that is completely based along the sea. Then there’d be no counting future damage: in the summer months there’d be a concentration on the island of hundreds of big and little boats as well as cruise ships, with little or no benefit to the community but obvious damage to the environment, as this would determine excessive footfall.
As though that were not enough, the port will in fact be private for the next 50 years, since it is entrusted to a private-public company formed by the town of Lipari (with 30% stake) and the Società Condotta d'Acque spa. This privatization also includes the commercial port structures, that is the natural and basically the only access route for the island, where ships and hydrofoils embark and disembark passengers. Naturally, all this raises big questions: any future spending relating to the maintenance of the port risks being passed on to the shipping companies and consequently onto the citizens. Furthermore, this disgraceful project is being planned and put into effect in a total absence of controls and protection, like the regulations of the Countryside Territorial Plan that sets out the need for a preliminary plan for the Regulation of the Ports that up until now has never been created. And it is reasonable to fear possible mafia infiltration.
Let us remember that the Aeolian Islands, unique in the world are currently at risk of being struck off the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.
We believe that this project is not a local fact, but a national and international issue. Thus it is necessary to have an information campaign that goes beyond the local reality and this is why we have turned to you. In Lipari, we are starting to get moving to try to prevent this disgrace at all costs, and we are trying to inform the public as much as possible. If you can, spread the word.
On Youtube, we have posted a video in which in parallel with the virtual presentation of the feasibility study of the Società Condotta d'Acque, we have highlighted the most important critical points of the project. Thank you for the collaboration, it is truly important!” Paolo

PS: It is possible to write to UNESCO to tell them about World Heritage sites that are in danger at: wh-info@unesco.org

Reply from Bonelli, Leader of the Verdi: The Minister of the Environment Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio has already taken action and will take further action in relation to the Aeolian Islands, by calling for the establishment of the National Park of the Aeolian Islands. This is a necessary step so as to be able to take action against the cementification and the eco-monster. Unfortunately the responsibility for urban planning lies with the Region of Sicily. But we are working hard to ensure that the marvelous ecosystem of the Aeolian Islands is preserved by setting up a National Park.”

The Loneliness of Justice

solitudine.jpg

In August I tried to speak to Roberto Saviano. I didn’t manage it. He is tucked away somewhere with a protection squad. He just replied by email. It has always amazed me that the judges and journalists have to live like prisoners. Imprisoned like Falcone and Borsellino at the Asinara. Anyone who denounces or investigates is at risk, not the criminal. But shouldn’t it be the other way round? The bad guy running away and the representatives of the State in pursuit? The great bosses live in the city centre or in some villa, on the run in their own house. The judge in a bunker and the journalist in a village in the Apennine Mountains. But is it possible to go on like that? Saviano, we are expecting you 8 September in Bologna, at least on the telephone.

Dear Beppe,
Even this happens. Have you seen the interview with the head of Naples’ antimafia unit Franco Roberti? My situation gets worse but I am worried for the future of the courageous prosecutor Cantone.
It’s best if you can be close to him with your blog. In this country, attention is dedicated to stupidity and when there’s talk of real risks, a guilty silence falls. Warm and heartfelt greetings.”
Roberto Saviano.

From L'Espresso:
” ….. Today the main problem for the bosses of the new empire are a magistrate and a writer. The prosecutor is called Raffaele Cantone: he goes on in silence with his investigations and trials against the cupola of the Caserta area, putting at risk investments and killers. The writer is Roberto Saviano, who with the 800 thousand copies of 'Gomorra' has obliged these little bosses (who have become big bosses) to live in the spotlight: the success of his book has torched the earth around the clan activities in Italy and abroad. More than the story-telling strength of the book, they don’t forgive his stubbornness: continuing to write about the camorra in spite of explicit warnings. And they don’t tolerate those that for them are personal challenges, like his presence in the tribunal on the day of the interrogation.
Franco Roberti, the head of the antimafia district division and also adjunct prosecutor, knows the underground movements of the Caserta families. And he speaks after weighing his words one by one, aware of the seriousness of the situation: “There’s a whole series of signals that show how the clan of the Casalesi is taking an interest in the investigators like Raffaele Cantone and in writers like Roberto Saviano whose work has caused the de-provincialisation of the camorra phenomenon and has made known to the world the true face of the ‘mafia casalese’."
It’s not a coincidence that Roberti is talking about mafia. But before looking in depth at his analysis, the prosecutor wants to send an equally clear signal. By asking the State to once more send out a challenge to those bosses who have infiltrated the business world of entrepreneurs and also the institutions. “We in the Naples district division are absolutely aware of this situation facing Cantone and Saviano. This is why we are working towards having the best Italian investigators to come and work in the Caserta area. This is why from September we’ll ask to have reinforcements in terms of numbers and quality in the staffing in the police offices working in this field.”

God’s water

water.jpg

Water is rain. Water in a bottle is marketing.
Each advertisement for bottled water should be followed by an invitation to drink tap water. Advertising common sense. If any Minister is interested I’ll offer myself for free.
Put the rain into a container with a label and sell it with brain washing. That’s what the multinationals do, the concessionaires. You’re buying in a bottle what comes out of the tap at home.
A priest has told me that Formigoni wants to privatize water in Lombardy. Pious Roberto couldn’t do it. Water is a gift of God. But he will do it, the psycho dwarf and Moratti will intercede with Opus Dei. Formigoni also wants to deal with the churches in Lombardy. To take over the sacraments and give them to “Comunione e Liberazione” as a concession. A confession 2 euro, monthly ticket 10 euro. 30% discount if the confessor is don Gelmini.

Water: Universal property of all!

”Why use up so many words to demonstrate that water is a universal good for everyone, a fundamental right? Is it really necessary? If it were, poor us! Oh yes – it’s anything but talking about civilization! It would mean that we have lost every concept of rights, if it is true that the first rights are those that are constitutionally part of human beings and of the universe. It’s as though, talking to a world that reckons it is civilised, it’s necessary to demonstrate that there are rights of freedom, justice and peace. Another thing is to know exactly what these rights consist of, and knowing that to put them into action. Even here I would be careful to talk about civilization today, when we are witnessing such a distortion to the detriment of liberty, justice and peace that I start to have doubts: is it possible that ancient civilizations like that of Babylon, the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans, were far superior to our own? In those times, with the concepts they had of justice, liberty and peace there isn’t the gap that there is today. Today, there’s only talk of social justice, religious and political freedom, universal peace and at the same time never before have we had world wars, never before have we seen such social inequality that is so inhuman and cosmic, never before have we had freedom so much at risk because of conditioning by market forces that are shouting for a vendetta in spite of every human right.
Once upon a time natural goods were the property of the universe. They were seen as goods that were exclusive to the divinity, that made them available to the service of humans. Water was a gift of God and that’s how it stayed. Now it’s just a matter of grabbing every gift of God, and so for example water becomes merchandise.
If water is a common and universal good, not only can I not take it for myself to make it a source of profit, but society, even more so if it reckons to be civilized, has the obligation to give to all without exception, the possibility of using it. With the lowest possible cost.
And here we are with our Region of Lombardy, governed by one who develops the cult of the market of God, the very catholic Roberto Formigoni, is bringing in the worst and most inhuman of laws about water, by trying to privatize it, even taking it out of God’s hands. Water has become the property of the divinities, that is of the multinationals which are made use of by the political Right to exploit the world. Hands off water! Mayors of Lombardy, rebel against the culture of money the God. And against the obscene policies that are ruining the environment and every other sacred right of Humans. Unite and involve your towns, at least those that are still healthy, those that still believe in the possibility of giving a radical change to this poor society, governed by those following an atheist cult! Why not return to giving the political festivals that social-political image of once upon a time, when there were discussions, between a salami and something else, of serious things? The water issue is a really serious problem, to be tackled with frankness and stubbornness. There’s no time to lose! Disintegrate the rubbish laws that the Lombardy Region is doing in the name of God money, to the detriment of Humans and the Environment!”

The sweetness of the public debt

vampire_cake.jpg

Taxes and the resulting income derived from them are going up. In the first 6 months the State gathered in 179,900,000,000 euro with an increase of 13,400,000,000 with respect to the same period for the previous year.
If more money is coming to the State, that should reduce the public debt, but instead it’s going up. By May 2007 it had arrived at 1,626,316,000,000 euro. In a month it increased by 17,000,000,000 euro. That’s 204,000,000,000euro a year, eight budgets.
The equation "tax increase= increase in public debt" is a sadomasochistic practice exercised on the tax payers. The more they pay, the more they get into debt. The debt is not called public by chance. In fact it is a burden on the citizens. It’s as though we had entrusted our current account to Prodi and at each increase of our earnings there were a corresponding increase in our outgoings. The more we hand over, the less money we have and the more we get our children into debt. The increase in the debt is due to the greater costs of the public administration. “Pubblico ergo debito.”
Once upon a time, the debt was managed by inflation, but Padoa Schioppa cannot devalue the euro. We’re left with the State bonds, the BOTs and the CCTs. The public debt offered to the citizens who buys and increases it. The interest paid out on the bonds in fact increases the State’s debt. These are perversions not economy. Group orgies in the dark with no prisoners taken.
It’s immoral to increase taxes and increase the debt. Any old ordinary administrator of a condominium would be thrown out. The next budget must eliminate costs, not increase the tax receipts, otherwise they are pulling our legs. A budget that has a decrease of 100,000,000,000,000 euro in State costs. The ri-sa-na-mento {making things OK once more}, this magic word that the trimurti ProdiSchioppaVisco, spell out, is just thin air. For confirmation, check up on (your) public debt.

The power of silence

dead_silence.jpg
image from the film "Dead Silence"

98,000,000,000 euro that the State Monopoly concessionaires dodge in taxes is not news. In fact no one talks about it. The power of silence is the true power. In Italy there are 5 newspapers and 7 TV channels that administer information. They construct it and they deny it. The citizen is a domesticated seal, saying yes and saying no and never understanding anything that is happening.
98,000,000,000 euro of tax dodging deserves a reply. Visco and Prodi must reply. Otherwise they are justifying the tax dodging. Those who pay taxes cannot be taken for a ride, they are paying even their not-tiny salaries.
The blog has published an initial letter to Giorgio Tino, the monopoly director. No reply. Today I’m publishing another one. If no one replies, the blog will go on. Tino don’t grumble. V-day, V-day, V-day.

LETTER TO THE DIRECTOR OF THE STATE MONOPOLY

“Dear Dr. Giorgio Tino,
We are worried about you. For months we have been writing to you from the pages of il Secolo XIX and from this blog, but you are not answering us.
Please, give a sign of life. Otherwise we will be obliged to present a statement of your disappearance. We’ll have to go to the programme “Who has seen them?” Basically we are not asking a lot from you. We simply want to know whether you have news of the 98,000,000,000 euro (yes thousands of millions – with nine zeros) that with taxes not handed over and fines not paid, the slot machine concessionaires owe to the State.
According to the Court of Accounts and a committee of enquiry headed up by the undersecretary Alfiero Grandi, this treasure chest seems to have finished up with companies that are close to Cosa Nostra and to political parties (AN above all). The magistrates and the committee say that the Monopolies that you are responsible for have major responsibilities for this “mistake”. Not just that: the Court of Accounts has started proceedings to get back this money from the relevant companies. And even from yourself who could be asked for 1,200,000,000 euro.
We have just reported the words of the committee and of the Court of Accounts. In a civilized country, you would have replied to our questions months ago.
Or you would have resigned. Instead you keep silent and you are still in post.
But even the vice-Minister Vincenzo Visco is silent and he has had on his desk a copy of Grandi’s report.
Perhaps you hope that sooner or later we will get tired of writing to you. But no. We have the right to know where our money has landed up. And we will continue to write to you. (ufficiostampa@aams.it) until you reply. Or unless President Prodi gives us a responsible reply. Yours sincerely.” Marco Menduni and Ferruccio Sansa (journalists of il Secolo XIX)

Ambulances and official cars

articolo_Olbia.jpg
The newspaper l’Unione Sarda reports that the convoys of politicians are more important than the ambulances. They have priority. The injured person has to understand, to accept the priority of politicians. If he goes into a coma it’ll be for the fatherland.
It doesn’t matter that what is described is true, it’s worrying that it could be true. It can happen and it does happen. The official cars with the siren sounding that are taking our employees to their holiday homes using the emergency lanes really do exist. Stop them. You in the queue. You are extra. Ask the parliamentarian for his driving licence and vehicle documentation. The reason for violating the highway code. He will reply: “You don’t know who I am”. Keep calm. Reply: “one of our employees”. If he insists, make a note of the registration number and denounce him for abuse of power. First read him his rights: "The people should not be afraid of the ones who govern, but those who govern should be afraid of the people.”
Our employees no longer need to instruct their servants, anyway it’s natural. Italy of services that are denied, of services that are private. Always with our money.
The politicians should use public transport, as happens in other countries. If they are in a hurry, a taxi. If they don’t do that it’s because they are afraid of the citizens. To carry the escort of the psych-dwarf or of Ms Moratti a whole carriage on the metro would not be enough.

Rome-Copenhagen, one way ticket

mermaid_Copehagen.jpg
Bureaucracy as such is not a bad thing, in fact it is necessary. If it doesn’t get too widespread. Italy is suffering an overdose of bureaucracy. A job with public services is not just a salary. It’s an extra position, an extra step in the passing of papers. A phone call, an extra document. Apart from the Provinces, how many other bodies are useless? A public structure has to produce something to show it is legitimate. If its function is of no use. It produces useless bureaucracy. Useful however in making the public go mad. Let’s emigrate to Europe while we have the chance. I’m publishing 2 letters, two ways of viewing the public good.

Dear Beppe,
My name is Barbara and I’m 36 years old. For the last 2 years I’ve been Nichy’s mum . Nicky has Tuberous sclerosis, a genetic illness that is as horrible as its name. It causes learning disabilities, epileptic fits and so on. But I’m not writing to you to tell you how desparate I feel. I’m writing to you to invite you to spend a couple of days with me and I will show you the real architectural barriers for a disabled person! Not the structural ones but the bureaucratic ones! Information is at the core of freedom, but in this subject matter (handicap) I have bumped into too much disinformation.
Spend a day with me and we will spend it on the telephone, we will listen to “wait music” and phrases like “I’ll pass you on to my colleague”, we will wait and wait… hours that we can’t afford to get what is promised by the law 104/92, but that no one knows how to give us. Our ears will get married to the Cornetta. But we have to be good to explain to Nichy (and all the others like him) that Mum has to spend more time with the bureaucracy than with him so that he can be integrated better!!!
Please give us a little corner of your passion… I am sure that something will start moving!”
Barbara. R.

“I’ve just left Rome and I’m in the centre of Copenhagen. Here I go out and find cycle tracks everywhere. My children play on their own in a garden with swings and a football pitch. I look at the crime statistics and they don’t mention organised crime. It doesn’t exist.
And even corruption is practically inexistent. I’m listening to the welfare reform proposals of the Danish social democratic party, which as it happens is lead by a 40 year old woman. I discover that among her 72 solid ideas, there’s the idea of ensuring that all the old people in the care homes get a shower every day. In Italy we haven’t even managed to get public care homes for older people, whose numbers are always going up.
The distance between Rome and Copenhagen is more than 2 thousand kilometres and you can feel the distance. First of all with regard to the public administration. I go to the registration office to register my family. We queue with numbers. There are pens for everyone. The staff speak English and so my husband, who is Italian, can understand. After half an hour it’s all done. The same day I discover that my bank has changed my address on its system, that is obviously connected to the registration office In half an hour I get the permit to park by the house for 6 months. Result: minimum bureaucracy, minimum agro. It doesn’t surprise me when my Danish colleagues have asked me the same questions in all these years, when I tried to tell them about Italy: Why? Why is there the mafia? Why is there corruption? Why is there a government crisis? Why is there Berlusconi? "

The Politics of Nothing

teatro_vuoto.jpg
The theatre is empty. On the platform, there are psycho-dwarfs, ballet dancers and pimps moving about. You can feel the loneliness of power in the news that arrives from nothing. It’s metaphysics, not marketing any longer, it’s air, fried air. There are no spectators in the hall. Only journalists in the dressing room for masturbators. It’s the politics of the masturbators. I recite, I dictate and I read my work. The public financing of newspapers helps the ejaculation.
They’ve got power in their blood and also in the blood of their blood. It’s a hereditary disease. The politicians are carriers without symptoms who transmit the virus. Senators and deputies are almost always sons, nephews, cousins of the ones who have gone before them. The true caste is in the blood, brown and not blue. The parliamentarian brings his son to palazzo Madama to show him the place that he’ll leave him as an inheritance. The citizen takes his son to the bank to show him the mortgage that he’ll leave him as an inheritance.
The Democratic Party seems like the album of the figurine Panini. The Partito delle Libertà is like the Postalmarket catalogue. The Nothing is devouring reality. The media are the first power, no longer the fourth one. The others are a creation of the media. Our employees are a creation of the media. They do not exist, they are only a megaphone of themselves, a disc that has got enchanted.
The costs of politics is a venal sin. A target invented to avoid discussing the real problem: the political class. A foreign body to the country. Whether it costs a little or a lot, it should still be sent home. V-day. V-day. V-day.

The bogey man

il_Babau.jpg
Il Babau (bogey man) by Dino Buzzati

In the single-thought Italy, the equation native-of-a-country-outside-the-European union = delinquent has become a given. The first suspect is always a foreigner. This sensation, whether or not it is true, the Italian lives in real life every day. At the traffic lights with the windscreen cleaners and the beggar. In the city centres with children on the ground asking for charity. In the streets with underage boys and girls forced into prostitution, true mass paedophilia. If the Italians who are behind this, were chemically castrated, we would be wiped out. With theft by Roma children in broad daylight at the Central Station in Milan or at the Termini Station in Rome. The illegality of the poor, of the exploited, of those who have nothing to lose, of the child slave is ever more evident. Ever more dark, ever more oppressive. In any conversation, out comes the story of the black man from North Africa or the ferocious Slav. The daily news bulletins report a bulletin of war. Rapes, murders, road traffic accidents. I was on a plane. I took off my jacket, belt, watch, everything I had in my pocket, shoes. I held up my trousers by hand and I thought of terrorism. Of the clandestines arriving at Lampedusa from North Africa. I wondered if they get checked like an Italian citizen at Fiumicino. If I were Al Qaeda I would use a big boat, not an aeroplane.
What does Italian racism produce? A type of neo-fascism? Ghettos? Pogroms? And who is feeding this drift? And why? The welcome should have some rules. The first is that whoever comes in must be welcomed like a human being: work, house, civil rights. The second is that whoever comes in irregularly is committing a crime, and should be put in prison. The exit document with 3 days to leave, is a joke that no longer raises a laugh. The third is that whoever commits a crime pays the penalty for it in his home country. The pardon emptied the prisons of foreign citizens. Repatriation was enough. For whom is this situation convenient? Not to the foreigners who have their documents in order who are paying for everyone, not those who live in the suburbs or near the abusive encampments of the Roma people. Not to the civic health of this nation. The politicians are on the make, left and right. The former with the comfortable do-goodiness, the latter with the fear of those who are different. For them the clandestine person is measured in votes.

The red line

linea_rossa.jpg
On the horizon there’s the red line: the end of oil. Where is it placed? At 15, 30 years? We know for certain that we will see a post-oil world. Similar to but different from the post-bomb scenarios. No one can say with certainty how much oil remains. Almost all agree that half has already been used. The cheapest, the part nearest the surface. To extract oil costs energy. If it takes 2 litres of oil to extract one, then it’s not worth it. The oil in the Mariana Trench is not economic.
What will happen after the end of oil, and above all what will happen before that?
States work on energy. At a well that’s drying up, only the strongest animals get to drink. The armed States will drink the oil, and towards the end, when the well has become a puddle, they will fight each other.
Alternative energies cannot in the medium term, be a substitute for oil. There will be a transition period of at least decades. Before the economy of oil, there were one thousand million of us. Now there are six thousand million. Will we go back to being one thousand million? Agriculture needs oil, machines and fertilizer; without that there’s famine.
Whole zones of the planet are not self-sustaining. Without transport, they will close down. The neighbour’s grass will get greener and the neighbour will not want to share. The transport of goods will become a luxury. Tomatoes from China and tin baskets from Mexico will become an obscene memory. The outskirts of the cities without supermarkets, gas, oil, fields, water will not be great places to live. If it’s possible, they’ll be worse than now.
After the red line, what’s waiting for us is neo feudalism. The land, the communities, the animals, relationships, the capacity of individuals will become important. While waiting for a new form of universal energy that perhaps we would willingly do without.

Believe, Obey, Pay taxes

Bertone_tasse.jpg
A person convicted for kick-backs announces the tax strike. A person with multiple time-outs, former P2 member, follows him, but you have to understand him: he’s got the Saturday night viagra fever.
The press offices talk about it as though it were serious. The political journalists do political analysis. The economic journalists do economic analysis. The citizens who can, dodge taxes. The ones who can’t, pay even for the others. But Rossi and Capirossi go abroad. The great tax dodgers have always dodged and Bossi, for them is superfluous, almost annoying. The public debt is going up like a rocket. The growth is among the lowest in Europe.
No one bats an eyelid.
In this making a racket about nothing, the just tax has arrived. The shadow leader of the government made the announcement at Rimini. In fact the Secretary of State of the Vatican Tarcisio Bertone declared: “Everyone must pay taxes because it is a duty and this must be done with just laws.” What these just laws are, has not yet been revealed. In the meantime Visco, Calderoli, Mastella, Volontè (Udc), Bertolini (FI), and Urso (An) all say that Bertone is right. The cardinal’s words are the new mystery of the faith, their interpretation varies according to the observation point. But they are always good and right: for the tax dodger and for the tax collector. The Prime Minister Bertone is on all the pages of the newspaper, including the second and the third and at the top of the TV news. This is the real news, not the tax people. That a person who is outside the institutions can influence the State and the public debate on taxes. That he involves St Paul to discuss a modern State.
Cardinal Bertone added: “The politician must look out for the weakest and the poorest, and be careful not to carry out any unjust action even in the distribution of the resources of the State.” Let him offer himself as a candidate at the next elections, he’ll win hands down and we will finally be able to do without expensive front men.

The city and the rainbow

double_rainbow.jpg
photo from spaceview.com

If advertising is an invitation to consume, what is left but advertising for those who cannot consume?
Advertising is a good of visual consumption available for everyone. The more we see, the more we fall into line, we feel reassured. Advertising is the enemy of the rainbow. Once upon a time the sandwich men were paid for carrying round advertising messages, today people do it for free, and if they could they would pay.
For how long have we been living without breathing immersed in advertising shit? It’s a brown mess that submerges the cities, the people in designer clothes from tip to toe, objects, the sacred and the beautiful. We pay because advertising is paid for with the product, to see our cities transformed into boobs and bums and great brand names. The Mayor of San Paolo has banned advertising. Renzo Piano has written me a letter. If any Italian mayor wants to imitate Gilberto Kassab let them knock once.

“Dear Beppe
In San Paolo in Brazil, Gilberto Kassab has decided to remove abusive advertising and to forbid it. And while he was at it, he has forbidden any form of advertising on the walls of the city. It’s a historic decision that goes in step with that adopted elsewhere to limit and forbid access by car to the historic town centres and to only build car parks in the periphery and in the green belt. Pollution in the cities is obviously in the atmosphere but it is also acoustic and visual and if the spaces of the cities are massively occupied with advertising stereotypes, they all become the same. Cities are places of diversity, of surprises, of discovery, of human and cultural curiosity. They are places of exchange, by decorating them with advertising their character is hidden, it makes them all the same, it flattens them under a single unique annoying stamp.
There are those who say that San Paolo has lost in vivacity and colour. I don’t believe that. I think that it is rather the addiction to the commonplace (that today is called trash) that plays nasty games. On the contrary I am certain that the absence of visible rubbish will help to gather emotions that have been a bit forgotten, those of the urban environment. We’ll see. IT’S A GOOD SIGN. Greetings.”

Dangerous falsifications

pinocchio.jpg
On 15 August il Corriere della Sera published an editorial by Ichino that insinuated that I am directly involved in a defamatory campaign against Biagi and Calabresi, to stir up social hatred that could lead to violent actions.
Professor Ichino cites my blog:
“In spite of that, on his Internet site a few weeks ago he allowed himself to pile it on by scoffing at that very person (Biagi), together with another victim of terrorism, with his own «satirical version» of il Corriere containing the following short article entitled: «Biagi like my husband Calabresi: a martyr»; text: «Gemma Capra has no doubts: "There’s a need to end the insults against those who serve the State". Otherwise there’s the risk that there will be a repeat of what happened to her husband Luigi Calabresi, killed simply because he allowed the anarchic railway worker Giuseppe Pinelli to get a breath of fresh air, or to Marco Biagi, killed simply because he helped the entrepreneurs exploit the workers better”.
The following day il Corriere in an unsigned article reported other phrases in inverted comments that were attributed to myself, that, like those reported by professor Ichino, I have never said, nor written:
“Grillo has thought to post on his home page a pretend front page il Corriere di Bologna with the news of his arrest (“Accused of terrorism: he defined the Biagi law “shit””), a powerful attack directed against the labour lawyer who died in 2002 (“killed simply because he helped the entrepreneurs exploit the workers better”) and even the outburst by Gemma Capra, widow of commissario Luigi Calabresi (“killed simply because he allowed the anarchic railway worker Giuseppe Pinelli to get a breath of fresh air”)

It’s madness, I am obliged to point out that the sentences were contained in a false front page of il Corriere di Bologna not thought up, not written, not printed by me, that portrayed me in handcuffs while I was being arrested by the police. The page was cited in a post on 9 July 2007 in which I prophetically wrote: Il Corriere di Bologna has reported the news (*) of my arrest. I would like to deny this, at least for the time being. The photo of my arrest is obviously a photomontage. I am more handsome. The article that explains the reason for the handcuffs as being my statements against the Biagi law, is very convincing. I have read it to my family and they agree with the journalist. They wanted to hand me over.
It takes very little for a fiction to become truth. It’s enough for those who are in command in this country to want it. Today you are a citizen and tomorrow you are a subversive, a terrorist. Those who have the media are in command and they explain that laws like the Treu and the Biagi are in favour of young people. The same ones that will see the pension with binoculars…
(*) It is clearly a false creation by the author.

The front page of il Corriere di Bologna was already in circulation for some time before being cited on the blog. As far as I know the Corriere neither denied nor denounced nor took action against whoever reproduced their heading.
A front page that represents a defamatory action against myself. On the blog I said in fact that it was false.
This is to clarify my position in relation to those who follow me and to indicate that I have instructed my lawyers to take action to protect me in the relevant judicial offices in relation to il Corriere della Sera.

Lead Exports

piombo_da_esportazione.jpg
photo from spiegel.de
Duisburg shows that we are still doing well with our exports, we are exporting lead bullets and mafia. In Italy the market is saturated. The European Union is a natural outlet.
A young man from Catanzaro has written a letter to Romano Prodi and to the blog. It’s a sign of hope. Young people of Calabria you are not alone. Duisburg shows that we are still doing well with our exports, we are exporting lead bullets and mafia. In Italy the market is saturated. The European Union is a natural outlet.
“Dear President of the Council,
The day after the Duisburg murders, I listened to the appeal on the National news programmes to the youth of Calabria, in which you exhorted them to react against the N’drangheta. I felt that you were talking to me as I am young and from Calabria (I’m 34 years old and I live and work in Catanzaro) because the happenings in Duisburg have had a profound impact on me and then because I want to send out 2 appeals: one to others living in my area and the other to yourself as Head of the Executive. To the people of Calabria I would like to say that we young people are fed up of putting up with this state of affairs and since we are absolutely aware that it’s up to each one of us to start saying “no” to start defending this territory because it belongs to us, now is the moment to change key. First of all we have to see ourselves as human beings, as citizens and not as subjects without rights. We have the right to live in a civilized region. For example it is symbolic that when there is a discussion of tourism in our region, there are always complaints about the lack of tourists, as there are about the pollution and the disorganization but also the damage to the image caused by these barbarous murders, only in as much as there are potential tourists, as though the residents don’t deserve the same consideration. We don’t complain, not because we like living in these conditions, but because if tourists were to arrive, we would give a bad image. And then how do we live? Do we not have the right to live in a civilized land? Are we not people? How can we think of having respect for the tourists if we have no respect for ourselves? A house owner who loves order and cleanliness is not frightened to have visitors to the house at any time. President, the second appeal is to yourself. We want to assure you of the reactions of the young people of Calabria in relation to the N’drangheta (and that reaction has been happening for some time). And we don’t want this reaction to be useless.
Every day, in small ways, the young people of Calabria react to the N’drangheta. In ways that are possible. the young people of Calabria react to the N’drangheta when instead of promising their vote in exchange for a job, they emigrate elsewhere (a choice that can be criticized but not condemned), when they decide to stay, as I have done, and with other young people, create a new intelligence network through the Internet (beppegrillo.meetup.com/191) and use that to spread a new mentality in our region; when they write, as we have done recently, a letter of solidarity to Pino Masciari, a courageous and honest entrepreneur from Calabria who has been forgotten by everyone (including the State) who refused to pay the “pizzo” and who denounced those that came to ask him for it and who today lives in secret far away from his beloved region, so that he can feel a bit less of a prisoner; when they write a letter of solidarity to the mayor of Falerna, in the province of Catanzaro, because having ordered the destruction of abusive houses on the beach in his town, he has had to suffer isolation; when they tell the mayors, like the mayor of Stalettì, again in the province of Catanzaro about imminent dangers after the fires that have destroyed our beautiful region, and they are not listened to; when they walk out of the debates, the conferences, the squares, where the only ones talking are the usual politicians, when there’s a refusal to vote for people who for more than 30 years have been in the chairs of the Regional Council, who have contributed in a decisive way to the election of yourself and of your government and who have the ambition to represent “newness” by forming the Partito Democratico; when they create committees because they refuse to suffer the neocolonialism that is taking place in our region where it is enough to start a company and keep it going for 5 years to get financing and straight away close down and sack all the employees or where in exchange for a handful of jobs, there’s authorisation of industrial activity that damages the health of the residents; when they don’t ask to be able to use public funding and they are derided, as has happened to myself, because I was convinced that in a free market it’s the job of an entrepreneur to invest his own money and not that of the community; when they stubbornly create theatre workshops with youngsters at school, as a dear friend of mine is doing amidst great difficulties at Lamezia Terme and in other small villages in the area, getting them close to the art form and moving them away from bad company; when they collect signatures (as we will do soon on 8 September) to prevent those who have been convicted from having a seat in Parliament; when through a video-denunciation (published on You Tube at: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=hvGaltFZzb4) they point out the bad things happening in our land and at the same time denouncing the waste of public money that the Region has supported by financing a publicity campaign that it daily demonstrates to be untrue. Just to cite a few examples of how we have reacted.
But yet even before they react to the N’drangheta, the young people of Calabria react to the hypocrisy that surrounds the institutions when there is talk of this age-old topic. In fact, there are other young people in Calabria like the prosecutor Luigi De Magistris, at Catanzaro and his colleague Eugenio Facciolla, in Paola, who have been reacting to the N’drangheta for some time by investigating the mix up of mafia and politics. Perhaps they have reacted too much. In fact, Dr. De Magistris just recently has had to denounce to the CSM, certain attempts by the “strong powers” aimed at removing certain investigations from him by saying that he does not have the authority.
So you see, signor President, in a world like the current one, a world in which we try to see good faith in those around us, these people represent a patrimony to be defended. Young people no longer believe in the politics that preaches well and steals badly, because up until now they have been systematically deluded and they fear they will be again. Their eyes become ever less naïve and more critical as they are ever less willing to dream without allowing doubts to grow.
Some think that young people are a great topic for an electoral campaign, but young people can recognise sincerity because every day they recognise betrayal. The substitute prosecutor Nicola Gratteri, a great expert on the N’drangheta and a great magistrate has said in a conference that all that is needed to beat the N’drangheta is some modification to the penal code and 5 years in time. He’s perfectly right. What are we waiting for?
President, you and your majority have the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone: to defeat the N’drangheta and to regain the trust of young people. What are you waiting for? They have always criticized you for your inability to communicate. Give a lesson once and for all to those who speak against you by showing that the best communication comes about through concrete gestures. Give an example, and not just with words."

The 8 speed penguin

Pinguino_otto_marce.jpg
photo from channel4.com
The 8 speed penguin is on sale in the best sex games shops in Paris. However the product with most sales is the lady’s rabbit. It’s sold like hot cakes. Even the duck for the bath has been a great success. It’s Do It Yourself sex. The loneliness of the modern woman. Technology helps. The Mp3 vibrator is the consolation of empty beds. The voice of Bogart or Pitt makes you dream. The rest is done by the vibrator. There’s no limit to the market for sex toys. It has pushed out the old sex shops. China will soon find out and will become production leader. With trade marks that guarantee like Mattel. Manufacturing defects could cause damage that is decidedly worse than lead poisoning. What if the penguin gets a faulty gear box and reaches 76 speeds? And what if the voice on the MP3 player, in error is that of Mastella singing: “Roma non far la stupida stasera” {Rome, don't be silly tonight}? In such a case, the physical and psychological damages could be incalculable. The only way the women could forget would be in a convent.
For next autumn there’re hoping to release a web cam version with the MP3. Basically a gynaecological examination. The male is superfluous, doesn’t always work, and you have to pretend to give him some sort of satisfaction. Better the rabbit or the multiple elephant with a double trunk that will go on sale at the end of the year. Ladies order it now.

There are so many (Modern) Slaves, millions of millions…

Slaves.jpg
Il Corriere della Sera attacked Beppe Grillo and his book: “Schiavi Moderni” {Modern Slaves} with Pietro Ichino’s editorial on 14 August and with 2 articles today on page 10. Thanks so much.
This book must be really annoying. They make out that I am a stirrer-up of hate, a falsifier. Ichino asks to have a public face to face with me. Let him come to Bologna on 8 September and he’ll have it. Before that however, he needs to mug up on the book. It’s the precarious workers who wrote it, not me. It’s got commentaries by Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel prize winner for Economics, and Mauro Gallegati, a university professor. Do we want to talk about law 30? Do we want to reform labour law? Do we want to sit on our hands and do nothing? It’s up to you. The problem’s still there and sooner or later it’ll explode.
In today’s article called “Precariato Globale” {Global precariousness} in la Repubblica, Luciano Gallino writes: “A first element is the number of people who have a precarious job, either because they have a short term contract, or because they don’t know whether or when they will have another job. According to an estimate to be considered cautious, there are between 4 and a half and 5 and a half million people . Five million people with a precarious job is 20% of those with a job. But these are just the ones who are precarious according to the law, certainly not just because of law 30, but because of an evolution of our labour legislation that started at least with the protocol dated July 1993.”

Professor Gallegati gives his response to Ichino.

“Dear Beppe,
“Schiavi Moderni” was just meant to be a book presenting stories that are unfortunately true, about ordinary precariousness . The current polemics give us to understand that “Schiavi Moderni” is much more than a collection of witness statements: it is the indicator of the bad situation of a whole generation. So even though it is Ferragosto {15 August}, it’s a good moment to try and think about it again.
One organisation that is certainly not very close to terrorism, the OECD, has more than once reminded us that when there is liberalisation of short-term work, such a reform must be accompanied by a reform in the protection of employment , otherwise there’s the creation of a labour market characterized by deep differences between workers with short term contracts with different rights, protections and incomes, especially for those who are young and with fewer qualifications. Furthermore it can mean that the use of contracts creates a negative effect on productivity and professional growth: contract work is often associated with short time frames and fairly limited opportunities for professional growth (and thus for growth in salaries and pensions) or even in training in skills. So basically: without interventions and protection for short-term workers , flexibility is transformed into precariousness with immediate consequences on the life of the individual workers involved and with consequences over a longer period for society.
This latter aspect is not often emphasized. I would like to invite everyone to reflect on this. The discipline of the labour market, if it is aimed only at flexibility, risks setting off undesirable effects, even counterproductive, in relation to those that are set out as the declared objectives. The short-term advantages from different types of temporary employment can be transformed into long term disadvantages, in terms of greater costs for the public health and social security systems, and for the composition of social expenditure. This is because the precariousness of work influences behaviours and life styles that go beyond choices that are strictly economic: for example, when to create a new family unit, have children, take out a mortgage.
It’s the usual problem: if work is flexible, entrepreneurs are more willing to take people on, but without adequate social protection, the risks of the entrepreneur fall on the shoulders of the workers in the short term and on society (or on all of us) in the long term. Are we willing to create such a heavy burden for the future (of everyone) to give an advantage (to a few) today?
Now let’s have a look at what the labour market reforms have produced in Italy. In the last 10 years, 2 million jobs have been created, mainly due to the big increase in short-term contracts and by the regularization of immigrant workers. In the end piece to “Schiavi Moderni” it is pointed out how the use of short-term contracts or part-time employment has “diluted” employment. In fact the number of those employed has increased, the total production has not followed a similar increase. We have the same level of GDP with an equal volume of work. The number of those employed has increased simply because two workers with contracts of 6 months are equivalent to a worker working for a year. And since the cost to the company of 2 short-term workers is less than one regular worker for a year … (don’t worry there is sure to be someone who will have us believe that the person who has a 6 month contract renewed is basically happy to see their precariousness continued).
If the atypical work contracts represent less than 15% of the total numbers employed, 30% of young people have an atypical contract as an employee. The value is three times higher than for other age groups and this is an indication that the “new” jobs are mainly atypical while an analysis of the educational level presents surprising results: the rate of atypicalness is higher for the graduates.
Finally the data on the so-called “precarious trap”, that is the lack of moving on from precarious work to fixed work. Data from ISTAT {Italian National Institute of Statistics}tells us that 55% of the atypical workers have had an atypical contract (work done mainly by workers who started work after 1996). The law 30 tried to regulate atypical work, and among other things, to give discipline to the phenomenon of the co.co.pro. (previously co.co.co.) with the intention to restrict their use, if they were used as a way of avoiding the legislation that protects labour.
However, in fact, without public intervention to protect atypical work, there has once more been an amplification of the alternatives that the private entrepreneur can use to employ labour, and now there is a range of types of contract, different from full-time and for an indefinite time, part-time work, of a set time, intermittent and distributed. In fact there has been an increase in the choices an entrepreneur can take on staff while nothing has moved on the matter of rights for workers.
If there are neither significant changes in the rate of transformation towards non-precarious work, nor the necessary increases in “real” employment, the new labour market will not be able to maintain the whole system (savings, health, social security and social state). And we can happily do without all that. Thank you for the space.” Mauro Gallegati

V-Day in the world

V_day_mappa_world.jpg
I’m publishing the response to the post “Ambassador - don't take it out on me!” that I have received from the head of the press office at the Farnesina {Ministry of Foreign Affairs}. I can’t discuss the details of the response. Perhaps signor Merola would like to do that by writing a comment to this post. I would like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For a few days we've had a map of Italy showing the Italian cities where 8 September will see the collection of signatures for the Clean Parliament popular initiative. New ones are added each day. From today I’m also publishing the foreign cities supporting V-day with leafleting (for the moment in English, Spanish and Italian) in front of our Embassies. I am also asking the Ambassadors starting with Surdo in Moscow to join with us.
Well, I’m on holiday, and when people recognise me they greet me with the V sign. V-day – V-day – V-day.

“I’m replying to what has been written by Sig. Michele Merola.

It is not true that there are only Russian employees in the Consular Offices of the Italian Embassy in Moscow. At the service desks and in all the offices there are Italian personnel, employees and contract workers who are Italian and Russian: the latter are perfectly capable of expressing themselves in correct and understandable Italian. At the service desk there are photocopied forms giving the list of documents that are needed for each type of request: this list is also shown on the notice board on the inside and the outside of the Consular Offices and it can also be seen on the website of the Farnesina.
It is not true that the employees – constantly supervised by the official in charge of the Consular Offices – go away and close the service desk. They can among other things go away for brief breaks according to the law (law 626/94, article 54, comma 1), as well as for the lunch break, as laid down in the contract ,between the hours of 1 pm and 2pm. However the work load at the service desk is sometimes so heavy that the employees are often prevented from taking their breaks.
The opening and closing hours of the Consular Offices are shown outside the building and they can be seen on the website. The hours are also mentioned on the recorded message that is heard on the telephone when the Consular Offices’ only telephone operator cannot respond to a call. Up until 30 June of this year, the time between presenting documents and the issue of a visa has been 2 working days; following the bilateral agreement on visas between Russia and the European Union that came into effect on 1 July that has gone up to 3 days. If there is a documented emergency, a visa can be issued in a shorter time on the payment of a surtax of 35 euro (as laid out in the law) in addition to the normal payment of 35 euro (that also is laid down in the law).
If a visa is refused, the passport is effectively held for the time needed to execute the denial procedure. The start of that procedure can be not in context and it can be postponed when it is necessary to deal with urgent cases of those who have to receive their visa before their departure dates. In other words, because of the limited number of personnel, it can in effect take a week – but no longer – for a passport to be handed back to a person who has been refused a visa.
The Consular Office has always given help, going well beyond the working hours when it is necessary, to Italian citizens who have had their passport or other documents stolen: it would be enough to consult the printouts of the start and finish times of the personnel to see that. The Social Affairs office of the Consulate has constantly responded to requests for intervention and assistance, even tackling – without seasonal reinforcements – the increase in work resulting from the greater flow of Italian tourists in the summer.
As regards the welcoming of Russian citizens in the Consular Offices, neither the Carabinieri who take care of the internal security, nor the Russian guards outside the building are equipped with cudgels.
As regards the custody of objects in the possession of the public when they come inside the Consular Offices (cameras, videocameras, or anything that could be a potential weapon) these are looked after by the Russian guards, for obvious reasons of security, and they are given back on exit. Mobile phones are not taken by the security personnel, but the public are asked to turn off their mobile phones that they keep in their possession all the time. Finally, whoever comes into the building, whether they are Russian or Italian, is free to exit and come back in at any time.
If Sig. Merola had bothered to ask for information, he would have discovered that the Consular Offices of the Embassy in Moscow issues almost 300,000 visas a year (the highest number of the whole consular network abroad and – much higher than any other Consulate in Moscow), with enormous benefits not just for the coffers of the State, but also for our business world (beyond the tourism sector).
This activity is carried out at the expense of great sacrifices from all the personnel, both Russian and Italian. The inadequacy of the number of staff in fact makes it necessary for the work of the office to continue into the late evening, as is well known to the Italian community (some of whose representatives have taken part in the discussion), as it is known to the public and to the local authorities who have often had the opportunity to praise the efficiency of our organisation (even in comparison with other countries who have superior resources).
The heavy commitment asked of the Visa office anyway does not prevent the Consulate from giving every attention, without a limit of hours, to the solution of the problems that our nationals can encounter while they are passing through Moscow. Since I have been directing this Embassy I have received one (I say one) single protest, that was resolved with the presentation of an apology from the person concerned when he was supplied with all the necessary explanations about the origin of the difficulty he was protesting about. “
Vittorio Surdo, Italian Ambassador in Moscow.

Caruso Precarioski

spot_lavoro.jpg

Repeat with me in a loud voice one hundred times:
Caruso is not left wing -
Caruso is a Forza Italia spy -
Caruso is a Confindustria militant.
Done? Do you feel better? Can you see more clearly now?
Caruso’s statements about Treu and Biagi have done more damage to the precarious workers than Montezemolo and Tremonti.
The heat has gone up to unthinkable levels.
They have used Caruso to cancel out Napolitano, those killed at work and the precarious workers.
However I am taking the opportunity to thank the supported typographers Feltri, who have promoted the book Schiavi Moderni with their articles. It has already reached 200,000 copies downloaded and all the bookshops want it. It’s truly this summer’s book.
Cicchitto has said that the book is culturally contiguous with terrorism. Schiavi Moderni is the collection of witness statements of precarious workers, of young people without a future and no longer of desperate young people. Where is the contiguousness? Cicchitto and the P2 were not contiguous, he was right in it.
Caruso has said that he will participate in V-day. Nothing against that. Entrance is free. But he has to do it as a free citizen not as a politician.
Have you noticed? For some time now, three wars have been going on with their dead: Iraq, Road Traffic Accidents and workers. In reality Iraq is in the bottom position. A bang on the head and a fall from a height are more frequent.
It’s a war declared by profit at all costs against those who work. The one who dies stays there and the one who counts the money always finds peace.
The Government has made a video about the one who goes to work and ends up at the cemetery. Shame that you never see it on television. You never see it. Watch it on the blog.

State Gaming Dens

V_day_Beatles.jpg

Two of the journalists of Genoa’s Secolo XIX, Menduni and Sansa, for some time now, have been denouncing the non-payment of taxes on the part of State Monopolies. Hold tight. It’s 98,000,000,000 EURO.
Where has this money ended up? With the parties, with the Mafias, with private citizens? Tangentopoli compared to this seems like just a joke and Valentino Rossi like a child who stole sweeties.
Visco if you are there can you knock once, given that the DS federations are proprietors of the Bingo halls. Fini and Alemanno, so busy with the costs of politics, ask for information from the Board members of the concessionary companies for the slot machines.
What follows is the letter from Menduni and Sansa to signor Tino, the Director of State Monopolies.

Dear Dr. Giorgio Tino,
We would like to ask you this question orally but it seems impossible to talk to you. For months we have been trying ot contact you, we almost start to think you might not really exist. And you should have an interest in responding (as well as the duty to respond)
According to the report of the Parliamentary Commission of Enquiry and according to the men of the Finance Police in fact, with unpaid tax and uncollected fines concessionary companies for the slot machines owe the State 98,000,000,000 euro. It is one of the biggest tax dodging events in the history of Italy.
According to the Commission and those investigating, this treasure chest has been gifted to the companies that manage the legalised gambling game. What’s more: on the Boards of Directors of some of these companies there are men who belong to families connected to the Mafia. So basically, instead of combating Cosa Nostra, the Italian State has gifted to it tens of thousand of millions of euro.
With that money it would be possible to build metro systems in Italy’s main cities. 1,000 Canadair could be bought to put out the fires. We could modernise 500 hospitals or organise 4 Olympic Games. We could create photovoltaic plant to provide electricity to millions of people or we could build the best railway network in the world .
For months we have reported in our newspaper, Il Secolo XIX, the results of the enquiry. Dozens of pages of news that has never been denied. According to the Parliamentary Commission of Enquiry, the State Monopolies have serious responsibility for this affair. Not just that. The Court of Accounts has asked the concessionary companies to pay tens of thousands of millions of euro to compensate for the damage suffered unjustly by the State. And in relation to yourself , signor Tino, the magistrates have started proceedings to get the payment of 1,200,000,000 euro in damages.
But you, what are you doing? You stay silent and stay in post, just like all the others who are responsible for the Monopolies, from dottoressa Barbarito to dottoressa Alemanno (sister of the former Alleanza Nazionale Minister).
And, what is even more incredible, there is silence from the il vice-minister of the Economy, Vincenzo Visco (who for months has been receiving the report for the Commission of Enquiry), to whom you respond.
Can you explain in detail what has happened to those 98,000,000,000 euro that according to the Finance Police have been taken form the State coffers?
Up until now, you have never wanted to reply. Perhaps you are relying on the support of the world of politics. Anyway, your armchair is one of the most desirable in the whole of Italy. Few people know it but the Monopolies manage the sale of tobacco and the legalised gambling. Basically a treasure chest, that the parties have been onto for years: AN has its own representatives in the Boards of Directors of the slot machine companies, while the DS federations own many of the Bingo halls.
So you can afford to stay silent. But who knows what you would do if tens of thousands of visitors to this blog were also to ask you these question (the email address of your press office is: ufficiostampa@aams.it)?”

Prodi’s gold

oro_di_Prodi.jpg
It’s a very worrying time. The stock markets are crashing. The GDP is not growing. However the public employees are always growing. Useless organisations are multiplying. The salaries of councillors, deputies and senators are definitely above the European average. The banks are reassuring. And the more they are reassuring the more worrying it is for us. The value of real estate is going down, but the interest rates for the variable rate mortgages are going up. You pay more to have less. The beaches are half empty and the hotels half full.
An economic war has been declared on the Italians. And to win it we need extraordinary measures. Visco, our V2, is not enough. They have let it go on Valentino Rossi in London. But it’s small fry. Those who don’t pay taxes no longer sin, according to Famiglia Cristiana. It depends on what you pay and to do what. Put like that it’s an encouragement (but correct) to dodge.
Prodi has had a spin on his bike at Predappio. While meditating in front of il Duce’s tomb he found inspiration. If Mussolini asked for gold for the country, he would have asked for gold from the country. He would have used our gold reserves to reduce the debt. Straight away he talked to his wife about it and she stayed silent for a day and then she zoomed off to the psychiatrist. Before Prodi, no one thought about it, and what’s more they didn’t say it. If the public debt, as the words say, is ours then so is the gold. It doesn’t belong to the government, it belongs to the Italians. The State machinery is rubbish. No sane person, wants to have anything to do with it if they can help it. And it costs, it costs a lot. In certain Italian regions, in the South, the Centre, the North it is the main employer. Two million public employees fewer. This must be your objective, employee Prodi. Take notes. Leave the gold where it is.

Ethnic Sexual cleansing

sedere.jpg
If Giancarlo Gentilini can call “culattone” he who uses his “c..o”, can the one who uses his “c..zo”, be called “ca..one”?
Gentilini wants ethnic cleansing for gays. He hasn’t thought where his declarations will lead. He wants to depopulate the region of Veneto, 4.7 million inhabitants, there are a few fewer males than females, about 2.2 million. According to the statistics about 7% of these are homosexual. Gentilini wants to deport 150,000 people. A labour force that would then be replaced by heterosexual non-Europeans. Those that he jokingly wanted to drown with a bazooka. However Gentilini has more respect for the women. In fact he reckons that all the stones of the Dolomites would not be enough to stone the female adulterers of Treviso. What a hard life for the sheriff in the middle of whores, gays and non-Europeans. “Culattone” is an old term, it has the flavour of the stable, of manure, of Nazi concentration camps, of detainees with a pink triangle on their chest. I’m suggesting other terms that Gentilini can use next time: sodomite, pederast, Sapphic, Uranian, homophile, gay, queer, LBGT, two-spirit and same-sex attracted. Or even human being, Italian citizen, person with the same rights as the heterosexuals, and the same as the celoduristi padani.

V-day: Instructions

V_day_grano.jpg
V-day Instructions. I hope to do a better job than the leaflets that come with the white goods. They make me go mad. Usually I go home, use just 2 or 3 controls and then tear up the instruction leaflet ferociously but also joyously. Sometimes I even throw away the machine.
1. The aim of 8 September is to collect signatures for a popular law for a Clean Parliament.
2. The law sets out the non-electibility of convicts, a maximum of two terms of office and the direct election of each candidate.
3. The text of the draft popular law was presented to the Court of Cassation in July.
4. My lawyers have prepared the form to collect the signatures with a detailed explanation of the law.
5. Enough copies of the form have been prepared so that there’s space for 200,000 signatures.
6. The forms will be sent out to certain groups in the main cities (Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Rome, Turin, Modena, Catania, Palermo). These groups are called Meetups. Anyway each group can print them out and if necessary ask the staff for them.
7. Anyone wishing to sign or to support the initiative can get in touch with the Meetup in their city or check which is the nearest to where you live or start up your initiative if you let the staff know.
8. In the “signing area” on V-day, there’ll be these things:
- Form for collecting signatures (to be printed on “uso bollo” paper in blue Pantone(R) 305 uncoated)
- Text of the proposed law
- User Guide for all the regulations about collecting signatures
- Form requesting the use of public space for the signature tables
9. In the V-day area, material for distribution will be present for distribution in that city on 8 September. Other material will be published.
10. If the above points are not clear, or to get help, it’s possible to contact the staff by sending an email with subject: info V-day.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Why have I chosen not to do just a single demonstration in Rome, but in the whole of Italy?
A. V-Day is a virus. It has to get everywhere, not just one city.

Q. What will Grillo be doing on 8 September?
A. I’ll be in Bologna in Piazza Maggiore for a show/demonstration that will start in the afternoon.

Q. Why Bologna?
A. Because it’s easy to get there from all over Italy.

Q. Why not Rome?
A. I thought of that at the beginning but then they didn’t give me permission.

Q. Where will the signature tables be?
A. Usually in front of the Town Hall of each city.

Q. What do we have to do on V-day?
A. Collect signatures, make V-day news and news about the problems of your city. Ask artistes to participate. Get your bicycle. Be happy.

The V-Day Song

Every special day must have its song. I asked Leo Pari for a song for 8 September: “V-day, ci sei o non ci sei” {“V-day - are you with us or not?} Download it. Sing it. Play it. People, it has to become this summer’s hit.

I’ve even created a V-day tool bar:
tool_bar.jpg

You can download it and insert it at the top of your page on your PC. The tool bar contains an engine for blog and meetup articles, the most recently published V-day video and photo and the number of participants.
Der Spiegel has written a page about me, here is some of the text. I’m still waiting for them to talk about V-day in Italy…..

”Compared to Grillo’s anarchic fury German TV’s main cabaret artistes Dieter Hildebrandt and Harald Schmidt seem like two government spokespersons.” “The most popular Italian populist is feared so much by the politicians that these prevent him from getting access to the TV, to this man who is half way between Savonarola, a satire and a satirist". To be comical and grotesque in Italy it’s enough to read the newspapers out loud, with a photo of a government spokesperson where the transvestites are, a Justice Minister who has been a guest at a mafia marriage….”

Advertising obesity

obesita.jpg
What’s good is not good. If it’s got a trademark it’s good. If not it’s insipid. The contents are different. We are eating the container. We are eating the advertising of the container. A study carried out at the University of Stanford to see how children make choices about food has shown that McDonalds is better. The same chips, one lot in the branded container, the other without. TV advertising makes the difference. Advertising of food for children, in which the children are the target, the viewer who is bombarded. Transformed into apprentice consumers. The snack, crisps, biscuits, hot dogs, drinks and all the rest. This advertising should be banned. Child obesity in Italy never existed, now it’s the norm. It’s advertising obesity. The fattening virus is the TV commercial. Advertising is dangerous for adults, but it can be lethal for children. It’s commercial paedophilia, the abuse of minds in formation. Children must get used to eating food, not brands. And if possible, without containers. For example, milk, must go back to being just milk. Cow, milk, bottle, child. Simple. In certain countries, it’s possible to buy milk, just milk and no brand name, from automatic distributors. You turn up with your bottle and you fill up. And the milk is local and costs less. You ask for it as well from your local Town Hall. According to the 2007 European Community’s White paper on obesity: “The last three decades have seen the levels of overweight and obesity in the EU population rise dramatically, particularly among children, where the estimated prevalence of overweight was 30% in 2006.” From Mediterranean cooking to soft food and tinned meat. Italian mothers where are you? Your children must not get fat like me.

Napolitano and the precarious ones

V_day_multietnico.jpg

The office of the President of the Republic has written to me to thank me “warmly” for the book “Schiavi Moderni”.
The Head of State agrees with the precarious workers. That’s good news. Napolitano can do a lot to change things. For example buy ten thousand copies of the book to distribute to the Confindustria. Someone perhaps will be ashamed to externalise the risk onto the young people and to internalise the profit into the current account.

Download and distribute “Schiavi Moderni”. It has reached 170,000 copies, but that’s not enough. I’m publishing a story about the lost generation.
“I am tired of being among the precarious workers, but I’m here with dignity. I’m 33 years old, a degree in sociology hanging on the wall in my parents’ house… a tiny victory for them! I started out in the world of work in a Call Centre by getting a code for paying sales tax as a freelance then as a secretary with a co.co.co. contract and among other things it was not renewed because of an “economic crisis” (500 euro a month for a 40 hour week).
Other little experiences just so as not to be a burden on my parents. In the meantime I signed up to be a publicist, because my secret dream “was” to be a sports journalist …. I ended up in the restaurant of a relative with a “project” contract at 800 euro. At this point I decided to take a big leap: to live on my own, well together with a female friend, even though I don’t have the famous security, but a rent to pay that keeps up with the times!
Tired of working just in the evenings I changed my job again as an assistant in a clothes shop, and finally I was taken on as an employee, part-time: 25 hours a week for 600 euro, not bad! But fairly frustrated. A few evenings I made up the money in the restaurant. Now I’m in one of the biggest Italian telecommunication companies, in the hope of being taken on permanently.
The opportunity was offered me by a family friend perhaps because they were grateful for my having been a good baby sitter for their daughter. The pay is average, 5.11 euro an hour, with a co.co.pro. contract that can be renewed every 3 months for the fantastic sum of 900 euro a month. I’m lucky because I’m also paid for overtime at 5 euro an hour… I want to leave this country….” C.D. 21.02.2006 16:08

Golden shit

golden_shit.jpg
The banks can be better than the “magliari” and much better than the mafia. There’s no limit to their creative finance. Or rather, the limit is the crack, the bubble, the crisis in the market. When savers lose everything, then the creativity leaves the space to the analysis by the economists who explain well in great detail, but always later. Whoever has lost everything, while they are reading, always feels the desire to meet them one evening with a sledgehammer.
The banks, especially the American ones, for years have been applying the infernal mechanism to mortgages. It works like this. The bank grants a mortgage to a person who is at risk. “Subprime” mortgages for which there’s no verification of the source of income of those asking for the mortgage. “Alt-a” mortgages given with a simple declaration. The more mortgages, the more the money for the banks. The bank gains on the interest payments on the mortgage, but the risk is high. Because whoever has taken out the mortgage might not pay it back. So the bank packages the mortgages in investment funds, a bit like transforming shit into gold.
The mortgages on sale are called CDO, Collateralised Debt Obligations. In practice what happens is that the banks sell the debts of people who are insolvent. With a treble gain: from the mortgage, from the fund and by eliminating the risk. In theory the CDO can be inserted in any fund. The unknowing buyer could discover that in the next few days. In fact, the value of the real estate market in the United States has been in free fall for months, the Americans are no longer managing to make their payments, the funds are plummeting.
It’s not known where the CDO’s have finished up. In which banks, in which countries, in which funds. If it’s your turn, it’s your turn. It’s the capitalism of debt, beautiful. The one that invents wealth and destroys the savers.

I hate August

Agosto.jpg
I hate August
with its tanned behinds, the creams and the big umbrellas.
I hate the empty cities. Friends far away. Our sons and daughters abroad.
I hate the August newspapers, the interviews with footballers, the quizzes, the sudoku and the forecasts for Autumn.
I hate the heat of the motorways, the toll queues at Bologna and Rome on the TV News and the comment about the traffic.
I hate the road works, the accidents, the lorries, the narrowing of the lanes
I hate the summer heat in the South and the first snow in the North. I hate the old folk alone with the dog, the bread shop with the blind tight shut, the cars stationary for weeks with dust. I hate the shutters closed round the houses, the burglar alarms that make a noise for hours.
I hate the still thoughts of August, the forced repose, the gardens burned by the sun, the loneliness, so harsh of 15 August.
I hate the fast food on the motorway, sweaty people, ice-cold drinks, queues for the loos, the scratch cards and the latest compilation. I hate the postponements until September, the air that’s still and humid, the dried-out plants in front of the restaurants on holiday.
I hate the repetitiveness, the consumerism, the waste of August. I hate the pretend joy, the pretend holidays and the pretend money of August.
I hate the fry-ups of fish at the seaside, the sorbet in the square, the polenta with mushrooms in the mountains,
I hate the rediscovery of nature in August, the goats, the horses, the cows, the ducks seen as though it were the first time. But what I hate most about August is the sense of emptiness, its indolence, its putting off, its making us go round for nothing, the “closed for 4 weeks”.
I hate the calendar of 12 months. Eleven without August, are more than enough.
And I even hate me who’s writing these things.

Italia flambé

canadair.jpg
Fire purifies. Someone gets reduced to ashes every so often but the cement structures are saved. New buildings, new investments, new jobs.
The fire-setters are benefactors of the GDP. Without them how many would be twiddling their thumbs in Italy? The real estate companies would have to put them on their Boards of Directors. The mayors appoint them cabinet members for development. Lupo Benni says his bit about Italian fire.

“In Italy there’s something burning even when all the fires are out: then the fire-setters of forgetfulness move into action. A few days ago all the newspapers had headlines saying that Italy was on fire, that thousands of tourists had risked death, that the emergency services had been tardy and that prevention was zero. Some know-all flame expert rushed in to describe the identikit of the arsonist with his social disadvantage, perhaps a mum that was not sufficiently warm. Someone else immediately called for the death sentence by grilling or by microwave. Someone more seriously indicated the guilty ones: the mafia, and all the little and big arsonists who hope to get an advantage that is economic, pastureland, cement or blackmail money
Giorgio Bocca wrote words that can be shared about the end of common interests, of what should be the wealth of everyone. And there have been lists of measures that are useful and necessary. Ensure the efficiency of the law that stops speculation in land that has been burned, the land registry of fires, the obligation to have fire barriers for everyone, the increase in watch positions, especially in the days when heat and wind are forecast, the use of the army, the increase in the fleet of planes and helicopters, and still more. What’s left of those days? Forget Peschici, forget the Canadair pilot that died, forget the scary numbers of hectares that were burned. I’m already reading that if America doesn’t manage to put out its fires why ever would we be able to do it? And when on the TV I see the word Sardinia, I already know that they won’t talk about the fires that have devastated it, but of the Billionaire. There you are, just look, the Billionaire has had more space in this week’s TV News broadcasts than the problem of fires. The arsonists of idiocy and resignation have once more started to set fire to Italy. The trees don’t vote. Remember that at the next unexpected, sudden, inevitable fire. And telephone Briatore, perhaps he will have a fire extinguisher, or a champagne pump.”

Uluru

Uluru is the real name of Ayers Rock. A massive rock in the centre of Australia. The sacred mountain of the aboriginals. The equivalent of Mecca for the Muslims or of Saint Peter’s for Catholics. Imagine if this place were transformed into a tourist attraction with bar, promenades, a few whorehouses. If it were possible to climb up the Dome of Saint Peter's Basilica with ropes and chains. Snap a photo of the Black Stone. That’s what’s happened to Uluru. The aboriginals ask for Uluru to return to being a sacred place. In the meantime, the Australian government has a plan. Reduce the consumption of alcohol among the natives and the presumed sexual abuses of children even by removing the children from their families. The aboriginals still remember the “Stolen Generation”. The 100,000 aboriginal children stolen by the government last century to educate them. The aboriginals don’t want to commercialize their territory for the mass tourism of the white man. Yesterday the aboriginal Bruce Trevorrow, won a legal case with compensation of 525,000 Australian dollars for having been removed from his mother as a child. In some parts of Australia the aboriginals have been exterminated. As happened in Tasmania where they organised the aboriginal hunts. Then they became extinct and they were not reintroduced by the hunters.

The spread of alcohol that is such a worry to the Prime Minister John Howard is the fault of the whites. Before they arrived, the aboriginals were sober. I believe that even in the great white Australian cities there is sexual abuse of the children in the families. What do they intend to do in these cases, remove the white neighbourhoods, do a few deportations?

Let the great Australian churches make themselves available for free climbing and for drunkards. As happens for Uluru. To establish a right of reciprocity. And let Australian pubs be closed down. The rules must be valid for all.

The V-Day march

I have decided to start off V-day with a virtual march.
Everyone who has signed up to 8 September is there. Each with their name and their own thought. Anyone who is already signed up can change their own picture by changing their details (note that you only actually sign up once) . Today we are at about 116,000. To see the participants and read all the messages it would take weeks.
It’s a small people on the march. Perhaps the front of a change. A signal for those who still don’t believe us. September 8 is a beginning, a starting point. The breaking of the political enchantment invented by the media. Remove these newspapers and these TV channels from the politicians and there’ll be nothing left of them. Underneath the media: nothing.
The servants with their TV megaphones and with the printed paper, are ignorant, they know nothing of V-day.
Or they will make use of it. They will say, they have said, that it is against the government, that it is a new political party, that it is a virtual movement, of 4 cats, that it is justice-alism, that if a comic is engaged in certain things.. – well then… .
The State no longer exists. Behind the door of the Ministers it’s not there any more. Behind the door of the Provinces it’s not there any more. Behind the door of the towns it’s not there any more. It died with the Democratic Party, with the mafia in Parliament, with the convicted scoundrels with time-out, with the pardoned scoundrels. With good-for-nothing people. With professional scoundrels.
It’s useless knocking, no one will reply.
September 8 everyone at V-day in Italy’s public places.
