Start from the beginning

ricomincio_da_capo.jpg

An Italo-Australian from Agrigento came back to Italy after forty years. He got a wicked nostalgia. He left his country in 1968 with Mike Bongiorno and Pippo Baudo on TV, and Andreotti in Parliament. Alitalia was on strike. He had to go by ship. The commuter trains were full, filthy and late. He remembered the road works from that time, happening everywhere. He remembers the Salerno-Reggio Calabria about to be finished. In his time there was the crisis of the Mezzogiorno {the South of Italy}, the problem of the mafia and the neo-fascists. He’s found everything the same. Exactly the same.
In a TV programme there was even Mino Reitano, Peppino di Capri and Gianni Pettenati singing “Bandiera gialla” {the yellow flag}. “And Pannella?” He asked me. “Is he still there?” I assured him that he’s still there and that he does a beautiful thirst strike. And Albertazzi and Raimondo Vianello? Are they OK? I told him that they are often in the prime time evening slots. “And Fede and Vespa” he went on “the TV News people?” “They have a different boss but they disinform even more than before, they have experience that is overflowing.” I replied. At that moment on the radio, Tony Dallara was singing “Come prima più di prima”{Like before but more so} and Mina was at the top of the best selling charts.
The emigrant thought I wanted to pull his leg and he started zapping the TV channels. To confirm his ideas. There was a debate about the modernity of the work of Manzoni with readings chosen from “i Promessi Sposi”, Benigni reciting The Divine Comedy and the Pope speaking from the balcony. The last car the emigrant had was a mousy-coloured Fiat Cinquecento, with a folding top. “And Fiat, how’s that going? And its current models? I took a moment, frightened of his reaction. And I showed him an advert for the new car of the year – the Cinquecento Fiat. “Mago Zurlì?” he whispered. I wanted to lie, but I didn’t manage it. “Presenting Zecchino d’oro this year as well. But there’s no more Topo Gigio. He’s now gone into politics.”
He sent me a postcard from Sydney where he went back straight away. An old postcard showing the rubble of Belice in Sicily after the 1968 earthquake, the same as today.

I am studying Italian and we are discussing Italian politics in our class. We are in the midst of our own election process in the US and find it is not too different from politics in Italy. A big problem is that those who are disatisfied don't get out to vote or do anything else to promote a "pulito" congress.

The word liberal has become a dirty word in the US. Even the Democrats don't want to use that word. To me, liberal means inclusive, progressive, open and transparent. I enjoy the vigor of the "V" movement.

It's nice to put in contrast the facts from 68 to the actual ones but since Tony Dallara was popular 10 years before and not in 68 the comparaison is looking arranged to make a speach :-)

Enrico, the US may have bases around the world but they're financing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with money borrowed from the Chinese. And that's not all. The Chinese have huge amounts of American dollars enabling them, should they desire, to buy American properties, manufacturing plants, banks or whatever they want in the States. Like the Japanese did in the 80s'. The US is financially in the red but the media don't seem to want to deal with the issue. Last week Capitalism had to be bailed-out the Feds. Capitalists pissed-and-moaned about workers expecting free lunches. The only way Capitalists can eat nowdays is if workers feeds them. So much for their vaunted superior intelligence. Does that make them parasites or what? But right-wingers, Italian politicians keep on mocking and laughing at left-wingers by reminding them about the Communist crash, meantime the roof the capitalist are on is about to cave in. I think Italian politicians are so caught up in playing their "gotcha politics" that nothing else registers in their heads. I saw them in Balloro' tonight and watched them till I got this nauseating feeling in my gut that forced me to leave before I threw-up. Who the fuck do they think they're kidding! They got nothing to offer to Italians other than the same old, same old warmed-up stale programs.

LP, I thought none of them did. McCain is a true warmonger and must have passed on his genes to his progeny. There will be no peace with him at the helm, but very likely, also little peace with either Hillary or Obama. Far too many weapons and 800 military bases located in nearly 130 Countries (many of them in Italy) are not conducive to world peace.

Mark, Did you know that out of all the congressmen and senators only MacCain, and one or two other American politicians have sons or daughters fighting in Iraq?

LP, with a record-setting 2 million people locked up in American jails and prisons, the United States has overtaken Russia and has a higher percentage of its citizens behind bars than any other country. In spite of this it looks as if many people have managed to stay free regardless of their actions....

Heck Mark! They don't call the United States, "The Land Of The Free" for nothing.

What percent of U.S. Congressmen have criminal records? The following applies to the year 2000. You can bet it's no better now.

* 29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.
* 7 have been arrested for fraud.
* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks.
* 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.
* 3 have been arrested for assault.
* 71 have credit reports so bad they can't qualify for a credit card.
* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.
* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting.
* 21 are current defendants in lawsuits.
* And in 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving, but released after they claimed Congressional immunity.

E tutto molto bene, vilificare tutti politici.

Ferrara Youtubed comments, where he says that nowhere in the world are politicians trashed and bad-mouthed as they're on Italian TV shows are, to put mildly, exaggerated. He should tune in and hear the trashing and tar-feathering American politicians get from American, radio talk-shows or Murdoch's Fox TV. That's trashing and bad-mouthing! Ferrara claims Mastella was humiliated and pilloried before millions of TV viewers. Well, I wonder how he felt when Berlusconi fired Enzo Biagi from Italian TV. Ferrara talks about disrespect shown to Mastella's office as Minister of Justice. Has Ferrara ever heard Berlusconi bad-mouthing the Italian justice system -especially its judges? But, it seems that nothing offends his aristocratic sensibilities more than the word "vafanculo" so steeped in the "antipolitica" movement. That word is, of course, expressing rage and it seems there are a lot of enraged Italians who can't take it anymore nowdays. But Ferrara is right when he says that there is no pure political system, free from scandals and corruptions. Sure, (as difficult as it is to believe) politicians, after all, are humans. Except that no parliament is as full of law-breaking parlementarians as the Italian parliament is.

ESERCITARE IL DIRITTO DI RIFIUTARE LA SCHEDA (DOPO VIDIMATA), dicendo:
